    Off your game

My cell phone number is on the guest keys. When I check them in, I routinely tell them "I do live here, but it's a big house and I may run out for errands or grab a bite to eat. Feel free to call or text me anytime if you can't find me." That also gives me the freedom to hide out in my...

Walk in season is upon us

I inwardly groan when I get a late call. Happened tonight. Two out of four rooms booked, no crab tonight so I thought we could visit with friends. Putting my shoes on, "Ring, do you have any vacancies?" Sigh. DH stayed home while I went out for a break. You stay, you pay. End of story.

Food Delivery, Delivering Breakfast To The Room, Bike in Room - How do you handle this kind of stuff?

We provide plates and utensils on a shelf in our dining room and let guests know they are welcome to use them. I basically tell them they must eat in the dining room and not their room (white bedding) and most people get it. Only one place will delive pizza but it's too complicated, as our...

    Off your game

I had that after we took the weekend off a couple of weeks ago. I felt like I was drugged. I had to keep going over the menu over and over in my head because I was sure I forgot something. Took me four days to get out of my cloud.

    Can't Find The Binder...

I pick things up and take them with me to another room all the time. Lay them down, forget them in 10 seconds. Here's hoping it shows up in the strangest of places. Like losing a hand!

Month end tally is very good

Had five empty room nights. Took one weekend off. Ended up with 95% occupancy. August is looking good at 90%. Looking at my ResKey reports--if we don't book anymore rooms for the rest of the year, we're still up over last year! Who needs a gym?

Check in on the wrong day

Got my first' I'm sorry, but you've booked this room for 2017 , not this year! And it was done by a travel agent. And they did it through Expedia. I was full, everyone in the area was full. DH called a place about 20 minutes away and they had space. Had never recommended them before but their...

    July Dudness?

That is the nature of my beast. The bulk of the season is June to September. I'm the only B&B in my town and vicinity. Plus, good reviews and word of mouth are really filling me up this year. We're almost at the end of a three day weekend that I blocked off a few months ago. It's been a...

    Note to self:

Oh yeah. Just rantin'. Did it to myself and bit off more than I could chew. We booked off next weekend ( how about that!) so that will fix me up. Plus I got a lovely card in the mail from a dear friend that brought a smile to my face. Maybe one day I'll go visit that friend when I've blocked off...

    Quick Breads

I find the problem with the convection feature for quick breads is that the top is done, looks done, but the centre is still gummy. Maybe better to bake longer at a bit lower temperature? Maybe Generic can chime in???

Okay, for my list next year: A second dryer Part time help Clone myself (rough week)

    Quick Breads

I find it looks good on the outside too soon. I put a tent foil on it at about the 3/4 mark. Check it with a cake tester often near the end. When my tester comes out clean, I even leave it in for another five minutes. Let it cool in the pan for a bit, it will continue cooking and then turn it...
