Right there with you. For me, it's the four foot wide front door that faces south and carries with it the 92 degree air with 75% humidity that people leave open "just for a second" while they run back to their car. I am constantly on edge, listening and watching for people (that have already checked it) because I know they think that simple request doesn't apply to them. Or they stand there talking to each other with the door open because they were on their way out and something caught their eye (a brochure, a picture, etc) and they have to have a discussion about it before they go. Shut the effing door!!!!! I am looking at a $892 electric bill this month - but what do they care? They paid for it, right?

While their guest room upstairs stays frigid because it's cooled with the central air AND window units, the innkeeper is having hot flashes and about to pass out because they don't think a 2 minute run to the car can make any difference. Sorry, but yes it can and does!.
I certainly empathize with you.
I not only have a problem with the guests and the AC, but also a helper who has OCD and keeps putting the AC off! It's 88 degrees inside now and he's complaining it's cold! I told him to put a sweater on and dont know how much longer I can tolerate this. He has OCD and
keeps removing everything to clean it, has moved my personal stuff around so that I cant find anything (even tho I told him not to), and now I cant find the plate cover for the microwave. He never apologizes either. Feels entitled I guess even tho he has free board and lodging!!!
Any suggestions? He is good with the B&Bs but jaws their head off, especially at breakfast.
I have given him chores to do but he does what he feels like and ignores the rest. Should I give him the boot? He just left me for 2 days to go off and see a friend and I got 5 minutes notice of this.
I was planning to take a 5 day break in mid August and he is
supposed to look after my cat and the B&Bs. A friend suggested I block the rooms for when I'm away so I dont have to worry about it. What do all of you wise people suggest?
Waiting on you.

We close for vacation so we don't have to worry. Not sure how you handle someone who actually lives there! He may have tenancy rights depending on how long he's been there unless you have a contract that he only lives there if he's working for you.

If I'm not there, I'm closed. I'm part of the service that I'm selling. No me, no service.

Ditto...even when we were going full tilt we closed if we were going away. Otherwise it's not a vacation.

Thank you for that Generic.
I am thinking you are right and I should close rooms for 5 days.
I am wondering if I should tell him to leave during that period.
Friends have offered to feed my cat!

This is your moment of zen, brought to you by Natalie Merchant. Just sit back and listen to this song and watch the tension go away....

Thank you Silverspoon for your feedback. I am now feeling that
it is best to close the rooms.
You are absolutely right and
I would be somewhat concerned
about what he did when I was
away! He is somewhat unpredictable.
Thanks again!

Thanks so much Morticia.
Yes I am closing the rooms
because of the comments here and also 2 of my friends, PLUS MY CAT, dont like him! I think I will ask him to leave during that period as friends have offered to feed my little darling.
The arrangement is that he stays here to help with guests but if there are no guests, I wouldnt need him! He travels all over the world (no permanent home) and works in exchange for free board and lodging.

Just keep saying "They pay. They stay. They GO AWAY." I don't know how you all do it. Seems like a bad dream at this point in our in keeping careers. One week of full house in front of us and then just Guest House in the cottage until Oct. So glad we are closing the B&B early this year. August was always the killer month!

Must be the week. Guest with the bike and barbecue requests who is very pushy and went outside 3 times this morning between 5:28 and 6:30 and slammed the front door; guest who called yesterday morning to cancel because they couldn't make it, but of course they were able to make it once they heard they can't get their money back; guest who sent 3 emails this past week with dietary requests (she's so allergic to everything he wanted to bring along her sunflower oil so I could cook her food - nope GF oatmeal and fruit is the only thing I'm doing as this woman breaks out in hives from EVERYTHING) - well they finally showed up last night at 10:10. I started my day at 6am and was exhausted and ticked when they finally got here - they stopped for a nice dinner. By the way, he's also lactose intolerant so they wanted me to make each of them a special dish this morning as well as feed my other 18 guests. They're both getting oatmeal and fruit/nuts. Two more guests yesterday added special dietary requests including a vegan and a 6 night stay that needs GF everyday. Thank goodness our anniversary is in 2 weeks and I closed for a Monday/Tuesday so hubby and I can sneak away and refresh - that ocean air will do me wonders.

It's always August. Worst month.
And it's a lot of small stuff. Mostly 'hey I need this, and I don't care that you're trying to serve breakfast to those other 12 people!'
