We are going through a Polar Vortex right now. West Virginia (where I am) has a median temperature of 32 F with perhaps one or two nights of single digit temps a year. Sometimes it will repeat a week later for one or two nights and then back to normal of teens at night and twenties to forties during the day.

Last week, while I was away, we had 3 nights that concerned me but my precautions worked and no frozen waterlines. Last night it dipped to -1 F and is now up to +7 F and will go all the way to +12 F today. My water bill and electric bill will be horrendous this month (and the gas bill will not be far behind - I jacked the thermostat up to 68!) but as of now, now plumber bills on the horizon. I hope I have not jinxed myself because tonight it will -3 F for several hours (the single digits start at 6 PM) and Wednesday the low is predicted at -8 F. We also got another 5 or 6 inches of snow here Saturday into Sunday. I am in the "foothills", not our mountains where snow is measured in feet and the ski resorts are located, my area measures inches. We DO know how to drive in it unless, as happened the last 2 weeks, there is a freezing rain UNDER the snow.

So! How are you faring? Guests? (I am blessed with ZERO this time of year) Waterlines? I hope everyone is well, warm, and safely tucked in.

Guests: Blessed to have ski areas nearby so if the weather is right, we have a decent winter season.
Waterlines: So far, so good, hopefully sufficiently insulated to ward off problems but every few years we seem to learn a new lesson.
Tucked in: Warm right now inside, 3 degrees out, cold yesterday attempting to push enough snow to reveal the blacktop so the sun would help clear the parking area.

That term reminds me of childhood. Neighborhood friend was Billy Tuck, his family ran the Tuck Inn, seems like the sign said "Let us Tuck you Inn" or something to that effect.

Yesterday 3 men were shoveling the sidewalk and entrance to the physical therapy next door. I went out on the front porch and asked how much to shovel a path from curb to steps for the mailman - they shoveled the whole sidewalk and would not let me pay. It has gone to - 9 F the last couple nights - it is + 7 now at almost noon. So far waterlines are good. I AM beginning to wonder which would be more expensive - plumber or electric bill? I will be paying the electric bill. Sigh!

Struggling! A mild winter here and thought we would be open by now but can't get a plumber to finish installing our complicated water heater! Hung up till then on finishing the plumbing and scheduling inspections. Carpenter helpers we had scheduled were both sidelined with injuries. Missed our busiest season and now have to play catchup. We have had so much positive input on this project and interest in booking but it seems like we can't get over the top of the mountain. Not a quitter, but this has been a tough one. Praying we can open soon.

Sending good vibes to you. There will always be things that jump out "SURPRISE!" so try (and I know it is not easy, believe me) to have a bit of a cushion account - even if you only can add $20 a month. I am in year #29 - start #30 in July - and in November was hit with a $4711.28 plumbing bill to reroute a gas line that fed my kitchen (it went under the house inaccessible now) followed in December by a $2600 B & B insurance bill. The electric bill will be in the mailbox soon and the water bill will hit on the first (includes city fees & garbage). I will most likely not have any guests until March (then only if I am lucky) or maybe April. The last guest - over Christmas for 3 nights - was a welcome surprise. The "no guests syndrome" is annual this time of year. Hang in there! It does get better.
