Would love to know what you do while waiting for check-ins Its those last few that get to me. Say they will be in by 3 and its 6 pm :-( And they are just one nighters. ( here for 1 night) I can only check emails so many times and dust so much . LOL Breakfast all ready tomorrow baking all done. Wait Wait Wait

Nothing you can do. I usually just worked on the computer or sat in front of the TV, knitting or whatever. That's the life of an innkeeper.
And, by the way.... you never did introduce yourself here. That's the usual protocol if you are going to post

We sometimes try to call or text if they are particularly late. We also have a system to let latecomers let themselves in via a door with a digital keypad.

I do what ever I want....DH is the guy who has to wait for guests and check them in. He takes his i-pad into the guest living room and surfs while waiting. If guests are more than 1 hour from their stated arrival time, and if it is around dinner time

, he sometimes calls them to see when to expect them.

You need to start blogging. :) Or you can make dinner and take the first bite, that always is an instant check in time flag.
Welcome Buddy! Wait did you just read that and start one, there aren't any articles yet. You know you can predate/preschedule them, so if you are waiting waiting waiting, pick up your local paper and find things to write about. You can schedule them one per week or a random photo one per week, whatever you want.

Welcome to the forum, Buddy. Wondered who you were for awhile. So glad you've joined us and thank you for the introduction :)

I'm playing Words with Friends. Writing my book. Watching TV with DH. Getting ready to set up my crisp for the morning. Going thru the photos I took today on my walk. Reading an article about the last Shaker over in New Gloucester.
OK, not all at once!
But a guest called an hour ago and will not be arriving now until 9. They are at Walker Point visiting George and Barbara (ha, ha). About 45 minutes away, so I guess they decided to stop and have dinner. Because my time is worth nothing. Which is why I always have a pile of things to do, so I don't go nuts.
If they don't call? I still have a very busy fantasy life that keeps me amused.

This is exactly what I do - catch up on the forum, see what's going on on FB, check for new reviews, update my Quickbooks, send out thank you emails, pay bills, call friends....anything I can do on the computer, because it's close to the front door in my quarters.

Crazy! We have late guests who we know about, so are leaving keys. Our check in ends at 6. One single night called at 6:15 and said they were over an hour away, so they are being left keys also. Now 6:45 and not a peep from the missing other room! Californians..

During 2-5 PM check in do lots of laundry/folding, deep cleaning carpets/linens, computer work (answering emails/reservations/dinner reservations) and any other miscellaneous computer work (taxes, gift certificates, room binders, letters, etc). We stopped waiting for late folks long ago, people are on vacation and don't want to be tied to a schedule, we get it. Our check-in is stated 2-5 PM, this is because we expect to wait until 6 PM so that gives the clueless 60 extra minutes to arrive and get personally checked in. But if it's after 5 PM and you haven't even given us the courtesy of a phone call, we're leaving your key in an envelope on the door. We're very lucky to live in a super low-crime area and can do this, it's made our lives 1000% more our own…we are not robots, we are not on call 24/7, your confirmation states the check-in hours, outside of that you can get yourself settled in like an adult.

start a really involved project --- like cleaning out a grubby toaster --- or curl up with a good book --- or put on your jammies --- or even wash your hair --- and they will arrive. at the most inn-opportune moment!

me I have now subscribed to Kindle unlimited, have a ton of free books ready to go as anything over 100 years is now out of copywrite ie tom sawyer, Charles dickens, shakespear, Austin, bronte and a million other classics! if you don't want a kindle you can get the free app for ipad and computer - plus have linked up DH's ipad to my account so he gets anything I buy as well.
I am a cross stitcher when I have time so that's an easy pick up and put down - either waiting for check in's or breakfast mornings. Also trying to stock pile some blog articles ready for release so that's one or two a day when I can.
Also working on advertising to next year's conference schedule, getting people rebooked ie ringing them and so on.

Welcome. what area? we are North Shore of Boston. We have a lot of one nighters right now stopping on their way to NH and Maine to see the leaves.

We just go about our lives. Confined to quarters, but semi-free. I love JB's comment that taking the first bite of dinner usually brings them in. I've had that happen more than once. :)

I can almost guarantee a late arrival arriving by either going to the bathroom or making a "quick" grocery run.
