You see, the problem is always perception. Here's another one snobby and condescending. So, writing that apparently isn't snobbish and condescending? And how can one be snobby, really? I'm better than you because I'm grovelling for money and can't afford a home without having to clean your toilet?.
Just be yourself and be nice! Keep those fangs and claws hidden.

We used to get that a lot. Not sure if we weren't presenting ourselves as 'housekeeping' instead of 'owner-managers'. It shouldn't make a difference in how someone treats you, but damn straight it does. We get a lot less of it now.
Our best one, tho, was a guy here for a conference with his team. The team were all fine toward us. The team leader was treating Gomez like dirt. Like he wasn't 'smart enough' to have a 'real job'. So, in the interlude between serving course I popped by his table and asked what his team was working on. Then I told him Gomez has 10 US patents, a couple of foreign ones, a chapter in a technical book and was (at the time) known worldwide for what he used to do.
Oh, I do love that look of dawning realization that you've been an ass treating a fellow human being like dirt because you think your brain is bigger. :)
However, I shouldn't have to do that. You, dear guest, should just treat us like people.

I'm so sorry you are not having a good time up there.

We used to have that when I worked at the UNiversity restaurant - no one except me was educated on less than masters degree level and most were working on PHD's but as they were international students they could only work for the university so were limited. This woman was like "food where is the food!!!" to one particular girl who was working on her PHD in chemistry and was fully funded by Loriel working on how sun bleaches hair as this type of bleaching doesn't damage hair but bleach colouring does so if they could replicate it to colour hair it would make BILLIONS - and this was the girl in charge of the research! flipping idiot! (woman not the girl I knew!)
Also trying to decide whether I am offended or not by people thinking the saturday girl is my daughter! (I am 32 and she is 16!) LOL

Everyone thinks the housekeepers are our kids. Even when they see them come in the door. Then again, I'm 20 years older than you are...

When we first started I changed into more business like attire when guests were due to check in. That got us lots of comments like those that had to tell us their home was x # of sq feet or they lived on x# of acres etc. Comments at breakfast more of the same.
So the business style vanished, could not be any more happier, and we greet guests in very casual attire - I just love my assortment of flip-flops.
There are still the occasional comments to which I now reply that my next house will be one of those 'tiny houses' I see all over FB.

Hubby HAS to wear a button-up shirt and proper shoes while dealing with guests. I try to at least look decent (except for early check ins when we're still cleaning)... if they catch me in my yoga pants I say "oops! my ballgown is still at the cleaners!"
I love that people are starting to "get" that this is a family home. Our children do not run wild, we don't have the baby junk everywhere, we're just a little more casual. No sober butler business, at least as far as I'm concerned. That has liberated me.
It still irks me when the guests refer to us as "staff" on reviews. We make it a point to tell them we aren't the Owners, but we sure as hell aren't the help! I prefer host/ess... or Lady of the Manor.. hah!

I never thought about it before, but, when I go to a fancy hotel, no one shows me to my room. They hand me a key, point to the elevator and assume I can read.
But we always show people to their rooms. So we can (as mentioned) point out the AC or fireplace, the book, the wi-fi info and talk about the breakfast hours and house in general.
I did have someone ask once, "What are the rules?" I had to think for a moment. I said, "We don't really have rules....except no smoking and be aware there are other guests."
They sounded to me as if they had heard B&B horror stories..
Exactly! I think that a lot of people (myself included) just assume hotels are cookie-cutters, you know what to expect. With B&Bs, you are at the mercy of the Innkeepers to set rules; does everyone sit down and socialize at night? Do we have to lock up? Will we be "talked to" if checking in late? Can we roam the house?
It seems like there is such variety even with the B&Bs I see on here; I have learned that people simply have no idea what to expect.
We had elderly guests ask if there was a curfew.. I just winked and said "just stay out of trouble, see you in the morning!"

I'm so sorry you are not having a good time up there.

Can I give a 1 star review for the place I was staying at (my sister's) ? She is a bit of a cat lady (2 normal cats, 2 giant maine coons, and 2 big dogs), the house is full of hair everywhere, and kind of stinks a little bit.... Sorry to say that, but I couldn't wait to come back home. Next time, I am going to a B&B or a hotel
Otherwise it was great... A big family reunion of cousins and uncles and aunts that I haven't seen in a long time, (some, almost 20 years) ... A lot of fun. What I didn't tell Generic yet, and they want to do this every 2 years from now on !
Generic's macarons disappeared in about 5 minutes, while other dessert stayed on the table ... Yeah Generic !!!!

We're the owners, the innkeepers, the housekeepers, the cook & server and we get called 'staff' in reviews. Sometimes people don't have the right words and they can't remember our names.

Your secret is out….Generic is online! Next time close the place and take him with you. Your sister probably didn't know she was being graded on her house since she probably haven't figured out that you and Generic have an inn.
Keep up the good cleaning Generic and helpers!

Ha ha
I'm planning on a couple of days visiting a friend from high school. I urged DH to not come with me because my friend has an abundance of cat hair throughout. It has been ever thus. DH and I will go on a longer visit later.
And stay elsewhere.

Absolutely show folks to their guest room! I agree that it's one of the defining differences between a generic hotel (no pun intended) and a B&B/inn.
Most B&Bs have nuances in every room and it actually alleviates heartburn for the innkeeper if you point those out for the guest(s). However, if they're doing the dance after being in the car for hours or don't seem to want the "tour", you can point out your guest info book as Mort said and let them know all the info they need is at their fingertips. I always reminded them of this even if I gave them a quick overview of their room and its features, amenities, etc.
Of course you don't want to drone on & on. We had that happen at a property on our trip to France this Spring...I was sick, too much information (in French in which I'm not 100% fluent), and my dh just wanted to take off his shoes after a long champagne tour. You do need to get a sense of just how much your guests are willing or able to listen to.
It really doesn't take that much time and I found folks generally appreciated it!
