Cambs, There is potential for her to do something stupid or spiteful between now and when her official leave date is. Is there any way you can make her leave now?.
to be fair she is behaving herself and we are just generally not speaking, I am starting interviews today but not here. She knows she won't get another position without a reference from me so is on super best behaviour and with her being her so long they will seriously question why she has such a massive career gap. i was tempted to push her to go as it is unpleasant but she needs the money as never saves so much as a penny so will be trying to get any work she can between now and then. Plus think she is trying to get me to ask her to stay so is playing that up at the moment though I am resolute - when she realised I won't then we will see.
.
Best wishes in the interviews process!

think we are sorted (touch wood) was already in discussions with a lady we know ready for next door so it has just moved things up a bit - she is looking for full time but also runs her own small cleaning agency (2 other ladies) so they would cover the other 2 days and would also mean we would always have cover for holidays and so on which would take a majour stress off - one lady previously worked at local large very well thought of hotel with very high standards so feel confident in the levels of experience. Just means as well when we have next door i can expand their contract as well. I know its slightly more money but in the UK now its getting to be past a joke for employers
(1) expanding workplace pensions - I would have to put in for them if they sign up for one
(2) tax and national insurance payments and working them out which is time and accountancy fees
(3) lein's for council tax, university loans and child support all have to be administered by the employer now
so between all that its about the same = plus if they don't work out I have no responsibility just a case of send someone else.

Sounds like you have it covered...congratulations! Being a business owner is a big responsibility and expense. Do the airbnb owners have all those same responsibilities where you are? Perhaps I should say...do you think they live up to them?

I think part of the problem is that there was not enough of a line between employer and employee. It's too familiar. In the past you've made her problems your problems. It's very difficult, but it's better at the very beginning of a new employee to be compassionate, but don't enable an enabler and just keep it business.

It's being an Employer that brings the BIG responsibilities; just being a business owner (with no employees), the responsibilities are only just big, not BIG....

trouble was as well she was my parents employee and they worked on the principle if you treat people well they will work hard - harsh as it seems the opposite seems to be the case the more you do the more they will take advantage - its all about boundaries. I made various mistakes which you can see clearly looking back
(1) we should have made it very clear I was boss here now which was a bit grey at the beginning as took time for parents to let go and led to her effectively going behind my back to them while under the impression they were her boss and so on.
(2) they never had a proper contract with her of what was expected, holiday, hours etc
(3) I was not her boss for about 5 years so was hard to transition from friend to boss which never happened properly
(4) parents wanted to save wages money so were happy to run round after her and do rooms - im at double the occupancy so do not have the time to be messing about running up and down stairs with clean cups and stuff.
(5) her role was strictly housekeeping never dealing with guests - parents never did anything out of the BB together in 5 years 1 was always here - I am not living my life like that

Which is why if I have to employ someone, I will close.

Update I really go spare
(1) initially was going with a small 3 lady agency - between them were going to cover 7 days - then 2 of the women got jobs somewhere else and 1 can't cover on her own - so they have backed out - priceless
(2) interviewed a few people - 2 very good candiates offered 1 the job and despite it being on the job advert, job description and said plainly at interview we only guarantee 20 hours but its probably about 30 - when offered the job said I need £200 a week takehome so its not enough hours - so back to square 1
(3) other good candidate hasn't gotten back to me - been 24 hours so we will see
feel we are back to square one with time running out

We are in the middle of it right now, too... (although not facing the same deadline)
