What is it that can make us so willing to forget about all the compliments in the face of one jerky guest? It can make me fret for weeks - I think it's a special kind of crazy. We closed for the season October 31 - hat's off to all who manage to do it year round!
Maybe you can put up the closed sign for a day or so and pour a great big glass of wine!

For me? Because I was never good at the popularity thing. Because I'm, generally speaking, an introvert and this sort of thing makes me have to focus on the fact that I'm not good making unhappy people turn around.
For the business? It takes one very unhappy person to lose me thousands of dollars of income by dropping us way down on the list on a review site. It will take 20 (not an exaggeration) very happy people to move us back up.
On the positive side, as a friend pointed out today, I have incredible background for my writing career. I don't need to make up characters, they walk thru the door everyday. ;-)
The fixable things the reviewer mentioned are either fixed or in the works right now. (Some things were just throwing more fuel on her little fire.) The underlying issue is really the reviewer's own problem that no one can solve for her.

While it does seem to be true to a point... I have been number 1 and I'm now number.... oh, it doesn't matter, there are 2 digits in there. And yet, I seem to still do better than many of my competitors. And with the right response to a review, you have the guests who walk in wanting to talk about the kook and know more of the story. Sometimes you wonder if they book because they want to hear more of the story.
 
Maybe if you speak French to Gomez, his mood will improve. You know how he is.

I get it - I'm not kidding that I fret for weeks when it goes south for me... Just hoping that the reminder of how good the majority of guests, comments etc are can sometimes be a reality check that helps one make it over the hump. Sorry for the hassle of the situation.

I know how this just hits you in your gut when you're killing yourself every day - making sacrifices in your personal life to attend to the guests and make their stay a great one. Repeat after me - there are just some guests who are miserable people no matter what you do. You could be the world's best hospitality guru and you can't turn these people around. Misery guts everywhere they go.

Good Golly! That review is such a perfunctory outlier that no one is going to pay attention to it, and neither should you two. Annoying yes, but no fault of yours.
So cheer up and note that you have tons more bookings than us the next two months..

The only reason to give it any attention is that it will drop us to the bottom of the list on ta. As it is we've already dropped to 5th since it came out yesterday.
Hate to say it, but we get a lot of guests who say they found us on ta. Most people won't need to go any further down the list than 3rd place before they've found a room.
So that's why it's so annoying.

I know, I know. We had managed to escape all year without a review below 4 or 5, then suddenly we get a 3 from someone we did a single Saturday night for and apparently wanted a more modern place, not authentic 1888. The review was nonsense and I responded tongue-in-cheek, but what aggravates me most is that we fell to 4.5 stars??? Still hasn't gone back up with two more 5 Star reviews. Seriously? 21 prior reviews (19-5 Star, & 2-4 Star) and a silly 3 star drops us .5 star?
I agree that you should try reaching out to some of your best guests, explain the stinky situation and see if they will help you out. And if you dump Super Inns and switched to a format that used TripConnect, you automatically go to the top of the search list no matter your ranking.
Seems to me it's a good time to make that switch. I began using RKey as a test beginning November 2013, plenty of time to set up and acclimate during the dead zone. By December, I'd decided and shipped John our 8 years of past data which he converted and by the beginning of the year, we were all set. Not one regret.

Going to switch over the winter. Definitely need to change to something that works with OTA's.
And, yeah, it takes forever to reclaim your 5 stars. This happens to us once/year.

Yes, it does take forever for some of us... but for others... say CFI: since June they've had 24 reviews, that breakdown as follows: 7-5 Star; 11-4 Star; and 6-3 Star, and they still have an overall 5 Star rating???? The 5 Stars are scattered in between. Perhaps Lark affiliates have more clout? I actually think they had a few 2 Stars recently that magically disappeared... something is rotten in TA Land.

My favourite Pet Peeve is a local B&B that keeps on posting fake reviews... asking friends to post them, etc. I posted to TA a few days ago pointing out what doesn't make sense.
I lost half an eye for a half year and the numbers never added up to why... especially when I rated better than those with full eyes. This year I'm down down down the list and yet full. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm fully electronically bookable when most aren't.
I agree that Mort has to get her booking over to RK and get things more automated.

We had an innkeeper on here last year who was complaining about how they had more and better reviews but they were consistently down the list from places with fewer and worse reviews.
I always thought it was pay to play. You pay ta, either thru a biz listing or you let them get a commission on a sale, and you move up the list.

Had a biz listing = zero benefit. The intro screen wants to take the viewer away to other sites. #^<( TA
