From a guest who owns his own business and doesn't discount - 'this is not a yard sale.'

awesome.
we had a guest who owns a small business and when I told him our 'how did you get started in the inn business' story, when I got to the part where DH was looking for work and decided to buy a business instead, the guest fist pumped and whispered, 'yeah!'

Love it! Does this guest own a shop? I've often lamented the "discount mindset" with the owner of a local hair salon. Funny, people don't call her salon and ask for discounts. Thanks to all the OTAs, people expect B&Bs to lower their rates. :(
My favorite line from a guest was in response to me asking if he needed fresh towels: "If the towel's dirty after I dry off from a shower, it means I did something wrong while I was in there."

I had a guest who was a dentist pay cash because he did not want me "to have to pay the credit card fee".
I had several "discussions" with a co-worker years ago about "friends discounts". He felt he should get a discount if he patronized a friends business. I maintained that was taking his friend's livelihood. He should patronize his friend to give him the business rather than to a stranger. I have made it totally clear to my electrician that I DO NOT expect a "friend's didcount". Present the bill and I will pay it. All I expect from him is fair - to both of us. He said he is taking the job to make sure I do not get ripped off.

Yes, f*$& the TV ad that says never pay full price. With phone inquiries, I usually quote price right off -- out of your range? Let's both move on. Early years someone would bend my ear about how beautiful the place looked and how much she wanted to stay, and blah, blah, but it was a little over her price range. Waste of my time. If someone says my rate is too high, can I give him $XX instead, I give him the phone number of a nearby motel that will definitely be in his price range. Sometimes I'll ask if he likes reality TV cop shows, 'cause, well, you know discount clientele.

I've said it here before: The only really good advice I got from my PO's was this: Never, never, never, never apologize for your rates.

Good point on the "friends discount". However, a lot of the service people I hire give me a discount because I've used their services for years. I guess I'm guilty of asking for discounts because I offer to pay my plumbers and electricians in cash and they do give me a discount for it. The local company who just provided a quote for new carpet stated, "We're giving you a discount because you're a repeat customer."

Offered and given is one thing - expected and/or asked for is another. This only applies to friends - vendors, I will look for a discount (they are not my friends, they are just a business wanting my trade).

We do repeat discounts or gifts. Different when I don't know you from Adam, but you think I'm charging too much when you have no idea what we offer.
It's really the snark that gets me. Attitude has a lot to do with it.
'Well, I can get a room at XYZ for $60!' Go for it!
