Folks I live with are trying to earn some cash. They decided to advertise a room in the house as an air bnb ... mind you, I'm not sure they actually registered. I think they just advertised on craigslist. Room to sleep in, shared bathroom, shared use of the kitchen. They did not tell me what they were doing.
I am away a few days a week ... EVERYTHING in my room belongs to me ... the furniture down to the towels, bedsheets and pillows. All my personal stuff is in the room. I still LIVE here and contribute to household expenses while I'm renovating my condo.
Came home to find someone had slept in my bed. Had used my towels which were hanging on pegs in the room. GRRRR! They also tried to use my computer which is password protected. I found it in sleep mode, asking for the correct password.
I was so angry. I am still angry.
Apparently, they weren't comfortable in the room they rented and, during the night, they decided to use mine instead. Found the door unlocked and, like Goldilocks, made themselves at home.
This is an old house, the door to my room has an old fashioned latch, not a door knob. To lock it, I will have to install some kind of padlock. I've got a handyman coming over tomorrow.
My housemates were shocked when I told them. Shocked once I convinced them this had really happened. I mean, the bed in the other room LOOKED like it was slept in. they are sorry but no harm done, right? Seriously?!
They had strangers in the house who paid cash. But then they left them on their own to do whatever. Thankfully it was just overnight and they were not given a key to the house!
Back in my innkeeping days, I did have guests who left their room and went to another. It was unlocked, so in they went. Big surprise in the morning when I had to clean TWO rooms for incoming guests. That and an unexpected random person who ran in to use a guest bathroom caused me to lock up everything all the time.
I thought this rant would help but I'm still angry. I will be looking for another place to stay until my condo is ready. I can't stay in it right now. And I'm shaking my head in disbelief. I wonder how often this happens.

I can imagine the feeling of violation. I'm nauseous thinking about how you must feel.

How horrible for you and inconsiderate of your housemates. I would also feel violated. Wish we were closer - you could stay here.

The solve is for them to not rent the other room while you live there. I had a friend who had to put up with that. Strangers in her kitchen every once in a while. Landlord never warned her. Just not ok.

What nerve of both the nightly guest AND those that you rent from. They should have told you, warned you so you could have secured your belongings.

It is time you looked for other accommodations until you can move into your condo. Hope you find some place very soon.

What?!? What would they have done if you came home in the middle of the night?!? At least they didn't take anything.

yes i thought about the possibility of theft but there's not much of value in there. just my piece of mind.

i feel like the joke of the college kid whose parents rent out his room.
i had a padlock installed on the door. a not very attractive heavy metal plate and a schlage padlock. i didn't tell anyone i was having it done, just did it. i'm away until sunday and the owners 'don't know yet' if someone will be staying again and when. if i don't like it, i can leave they say. so much for that relationship! i'm the bad guy here, apparently. i can't find them on air bnb so i don't know what site they are using.
makes a great chapter in my book and will be funny when i'm out of there and stop being steamed about it. and nervous. i don't like the idea of random people coming in to stay overnight. it's not like a b&b at all ... i'm thinking like an old fashioned boarding house where people showed up at the door.
my daughter stays in air's when she goes to new york with her friends. she said yes ... often there are clothes and all kinds of personal items in the rooms and she's not surprised someone would just switch a room. areas they're not supposed to access are locked in the places she stays. they tend to do repeat stays so they feel they know the host won't book in other people at the same time. because they're there on their own they stay in places with one bedroom. the owner is never there. the lack of security in this arrangement is not for me.

I think I'd want a second padlock on the inside of my door for my own safety.

How awful!! Did you sign a lease that might define who else is in the house? At the very least I would think the change in terms of living conditions would mean a lower rent price for you. If you must stay, at least that would be making "lemonade with the lemon".
