Good food for thought for innkeepers from ThinkDaily.com
Action!
Think about it, talk about it, meet about it, ponder it, study it, consider it, research it, and write it up -
You've still accomplished nothing to get different results.
Action is how we make change!

I've been in so many meetings where we discuss all kinds of good ideas, then nothing ever happens because nobody will take action. Talk is cheap.

UGH! Had one of those yesterday. We have a terrible parking problem in our town - too many visitors, too few parking spaces. The Mayor appointed me, as a board member of our Business Assoc, to work with a city council member and a downtown property investor to come up with solutions. We've been meeting once a month since June with All Talk - No Action. I finally told them yesterday that we keep discussing the same things, but nothing's getting done. They looked at me like I'd just spoken Mandarin.

A term we use in corporate buzzword-speak - "action items." At the end of the meeting, review the "action items."
Sylvia, your "action item" is to conduct a traffic survey looking for #cars through vs #cars parking.
Jenny, your "action item" is to contact three meter companies for bids. We need the bids by the next meeting.
At the next meeting, you go over the assigned "action items." Either something will have been done or Sylvia and Jenny look useless.

Yes, I agree. I did make them set action items. I had done mine from last meeting just to get it pushed down the list because something else needed to proceed it. I'm the little fish in this group, I shouldn't be the one having to force others to move forward. I'm so busy with my business, the Inn, three other community events that I'm helping organize and now this committee. Two hours wasted talking about the same sh*t still has me frustrated.
Yes, action items should be the result of every meeting. Follow-up and accountability should the the first agenda item at the next meeting. Otherwise nothing gets accomplished...

Having had the distinct pleasure of working in a bureaucracy, it is far less accepting of a call to action than private business. If you are dealing with bureaucratic inertia, you may have to look beyond the action to the motivator, but really, WHO has that kind of time! I have just stopped all of that stuff because it was the least important thing on my list. No more community meetings. No more rally cries. No more local event planning. Lots more happiness.

I always wonder about the other innkeepers that manage to be on town committees and even committees. DH and I are both pretty much as busy as we ever want to be. I admire those who decorate for fundraisers, deliver brochures, set up tables and sell baked goods and baskets. But I admire from afar.....don't join in.

I've gotten very involved in the local community. I wish I could step out of my roles sometimes, but I'm in too deep *lol* It is kinda nice when the Mayor calls me for advice or when other locals call me when they want to know the scoop about something. It's nice to know what's going on in town (not as a gossip, but as an informed community member). I work on a few boards and attend all the city council meetings. It is exhausting and I often fantasize about how much (paid) accounting work I could get done if I wasn't doing so much volunteer work. But, I don't think I'd be as happy. Sometimes it's the only reason I shower & leave the house haha

I manage it because I only have 3 rooms and am in Podunk. I attend Council meetings (always have since I moved here), was on Building Commission (cannot be now that I am City Clerk), have been on Planning & Zoning since we got zoning, am on Development Authority, official Tourist Information Center for my City, in Garden Club, got rooked into the Women's Club after 18 years of saying NO (they were piteously desperate), teach knitting at the Library, worked in the Community Garden, keep an hour at the Chapel (11 PM to Midnight Saturday), an a Director on the Board of the Foundation of one of the major Rail-Trails in my State, and play in the Community Band. I also USED to be Marketing Chair and Legislative Chair for our State Association (and did a 2-year term as President) and USED to be Exec Director of the WV Rails-to-Trails Council - and did the set up tables and deliver brochures for both of them (and me). The only paid item is the City Clerk (very small salary), the rest cost ME money.
But it keeps me from being tied to the B & B and gets me out of the house. None of it is a constant every day thing but keeps me a rounded person. Oh yes, something frustrating and sometimes things bump into each other (or the B & B) but we work around it.
Had to go pick up paintings from the art show today. Daughter packed up her stuff, her boyfriend cleaned the bathroom while she and I made he bed and cleaned the bedroom. They left for the airport and we left to get the paintings and we got home before guests arrived. Waiting for them now.
3 rooms in Podunk make it possible. (adding this is not a "pin a rose on me", it is just a statement. DH doctor appointments give me the biggest problems as I MUST go with every time.)

we do all sorts but try and fit it in round what we do anyway
(1) Christmas market committee - 1 meeting every 2 months and I deliver the advertising flyers - put on my headphones and start marching! this means a 4 day super busy weekend for the whole town shops, restaurants and hotels so I like to do my bit for something that makes me good money.
(2) friends of valley gardens 1940's day - some Very lengthy meetings but does amazing work in our award winning park -- we are trying to make it more into a weekend so it benefits the whole town more but its slow going.
(3) chamber of commerce management committee - to be fair I do very little but it works very hard on the issues that I consider really matter - improved transport to my town, more inbound flights, parking, shop/restaurant balance in the town centre and traffic flow - all of which are majour issues.

and so...this is pertaining to ourselves and our innkeeping roles. That is why it is shared here.

And I will line up a couple of the City workers with a truck to move beds and get that king bed for me which will give me as soon as I have a week I can block off before the snow comes. They will be on snow removal once that happens.
