Why Ring The Bell or Ask For DF?

Silk soy vanilla yogurt is pretty white - almost looks like the regular stuff -- so much so that once the parfait was done I had to put a piece of mint on top to tell the two apart. My daughter loves it compared to the almond milk and coconut milk versions (obviously none are as good as the...

Why Ring The Bell or Ask For DF?

Not sure why but it always seems to be the person with one issue, who then adds another issue, is an issue themselves. Do they really think that we'd serve them yogurt and lie about it? Why bother to tell us your issues so that we can accommodate you to then not trust us and refuse to eat what...

Why Ring The Bell or Ask For DF?

This morning a guest comes to the dining room and instantly rings the bell. We typically hear them and wait a minute for them to get their coffee/tea and have a seat. So hubby goes out and says we'll be right with them, take a seat. I make their parfait and as he's going out the door I drop...

If you were to give only one PR tip to an innkeeper, what would that be?

Exactly. I wanted to add more amenities for our guests but with taxes, utilities and food going up I wasn't taking the hit. So I added $10 a night to each room and now all guests get a plate of truffles and a locally made popcorn treat upon arrival. This increase also covers when I put out...

I Give Up... No Way To Win

Here's a new rule I didn't think I'd have to add, but happened this week: There are blinds in your room for privacy and since you are on the ground level by the hot tub and fire pit, you should close those blinds while you are having sex in the jacuzzi tub or bed in your room. That way, when we...

    Why bother with the sign?

This past couple of years we haven't gotten many walk-ins -- we used to get lots of Europeans & Brits who didn't plan and then would book last minute or just show up. Only 1 this entire summer. It's fine we're having a fantastic year but I've heard that those demographics are traveling more to...

    Here Comes Trouble

Sounds like a fun road trip - we'll be attending but flying out the night before on the late plane after we get all the guests out from the weekend and drive 3 hours to the airport! Gonna need a day just to recoup from the trip out there.

    A Different Way of Marketing

Funny, the three places where we've had the worst stay were SR properties. One was on the verge of bankruptcy and was let go but still kept paying their dues so they were in the book. The second the innkeeper was totally kooky and had an annoying breakfast experience with singing hamsters that...

    Don't you have another room?

You can't help the noise. We're remote back on over 20 acres and if the guy up the street decides to start shooting off his arsenal of guns then my guests get to checkin to the sound of a mini war going on. We are a family that target shoots and hunts as well but we don't break out the ammo...

Trying for an early check in! A good reason for a half bath.

Love the Ring, it's a godsend since we moved into our little house next-door. It buzzes us when a car drives by the front door to the parking area and we have plenty of time to get over here and greet them. Also lets us see who is coming back so we know if it's a checkin if we recognize the...

Trying for an early check in! A good reason for a half bath.

No early check-ins unless I am sitting here doing absolutely nothing and feel like it. Front door is locked and a note saying I'm out running errands is up. Housekeeper is instructed not to answer the door as she has work to do and can't check them in anyway. From 11-3pm is all the time I...

Thanks for the help ... NOT

We remedied this by putting a small round white plate beside the coffee urns and we put a spoon on it when we set it up in the morning. Now all of the used spoons go here instead of on the counter getting everything sticky -- lead the little lambs to do what you want and most will.

"When I retire the one thing I will not miss is..."

Did the same at my local dollar store - $10 and it stays in the box in the plastic bag until I need it. Anyone who is just intolerant can go in the regular toaster oven (I clean the racks) but a celiac has to have special treatment. And $10 is cheap money to ensure someone doesn't get sick.

"When I retire the one thing I will not miss is..."

Hubby is lactose and gluten intolerant. Daughter inherited the lactose intolerance. I'd say more women are doing the diet thing and I find more men are allergic to nuts. Just my observation. But I also find guys who say they are allergic to eggs all the time and then their wife just says...

    Anyone Using A Commercial Dishwasher

We've had the same one now for over 10 years since we opened with almost no problems. We didn't go with the Hobart because of the cost, so we purchased a Fagor and love it - half the price back then at $2700. Have had I think 3 repair calls in 10 years and they even sent us a part one time and...

"When I retire the one thing I will not miss is..."

Absolutely without question - food allergies and the fad diets some are on. This month already I've had the following: - vegan - GF, DF - Tree nut allergies (there goes using my fabulous granola) - all food dyes, especially red - GF but your cookies look so good I'm gonna have one now as she...

    Kids at the B&B

Good for you, I've done the same thing by turning down a couple with an 8 year old they mentioned casually at the end. My place is for couples and we have a max occupancy of just 2 guests per room. I don't want to worry about other guests being bothered while a couple is here to get away from...

    Guest Problems

Mold can happen to anyone at anytime and those seals on the bottom of the showers can be a pest. Our housekeeper and my husband clean them constantly with a toothbrush to keep any mold out. My newest shower is an open concept so I didn't have to deal with a shower door seal. This innkeeper was...

Thanks, I like your thinking. November is quiet so perhaps we'll slip away then, this time to the beach!!!

    Turn Pro

If you aim high, you'll always be better than most of your competition. That's been our motto since we opened over a decade ago and helped us grow and be more successful than some in business for 2-3 times as long as us. It's what I've been telling my kids since they were old enough to...
