Be WARNED - this is a VENT.
I never expected to need n escort so no one accompanied me. We just had a very contentious City Election. As City Clerk, I run the election - deliver & pick-up ballot boxes, and compile totals from the 4 Wards.
As I pulled in to City Hall with the first 2 ballot boxes (small Wards finished counting first), one of the contentious candidate videoed me pulling in to City Hall and lugging the 2 ballot boxes in to City Hall. When the last Ward called for pick-up and I returned with that ballot box, a group of men were standing in front of the door to see the results from that Ward that were posted on the door. I said as i walked up the ramp, "Excuse me, gentlemen, but I need to get in that door. The brother of one candidate (unfortunately, she was the top vote getter) said to me as I walked past him, "that door is wide enough for your fat a** to get through it." I sad nothing until inside City Hall and then I told the Poll Workers what he said. No one was surprised at what he said, but since only his people were there, I would never be able to prove it.
The good note is that the Levy Renewal passed by over 80%. The bad is that only one incumbent got in. The next 4 years are going to be awful.

Sorry that he was so so so rude . Some people just can't see or care what they say in the moment. That is no excuse for his bad behavior. So thought less. !!!

Ditto

Small minds, small men, small (fill in the blank). Sorry, is that being rude?
No excuse for that, honestly. His remark, not mine

Unfortunately, he AND his sister are steeped in negativity and now she is on Council for 4 years. She and one of her cohorts (a retired teacher of all things) are in a position to destroy in 4 years what it has taken us 15 to build.
They so bot see the importance of the programs of entertainment at the Park and the events downtown - they want to do away with the Development Director who lines up these activities AND drums up sponsorships to pay for them. They so not want outsiders coming here. Sigh. It will be interesting to see how fast they can fire me as Clerk.

Sorry to hear that. It's the kind of thinking we put up with around here, too. I've fought it for years, and have won a few and lost a few.
City clerks here are elected, so can only be "fired" by the voters at election time.

weve played that silly beggars game in my town - official council position is "tourism is not important" but business tourism is - what they don't get is you can get people in with business tourism and then get them back with tourist tourism but you can't if there is nothing to attract them with! will say however the 2 ladies who run the show ground and the festivals team are formidable and the chap in charge of the conference center has the bit firmly between his teeth and they are finally managing the relationship between them and the theatres group better as it was a bit of a rocky start learning to schedule together but its getting there. Still no fricking conference desk and its been 20 years but we are hopeful for next year as feel it looses the town business. Also working on altering an act of parliament so we can use are 100 acre park more but thats slow going - have to get through a variation for this time next year so we can get a massive cycle race in, wish us luck!
they just don't get it tourists (outsiders) bring in free money! how is this a bad thing?

I'm sorry to hear this. Don't take it to heart or stew over it. As you said, no one was surprised which means everyone knows he's like that. Just continue being your wonderful self and ignore them. Those who are like him feels insecure of themselves or jealous of you. So they try to pull you down to lift them up. Take it as a compliment!

He's just the brother of so-and-so instead of the great Gillum! You worked hard to get where you are, he just got stuck being her brother! Wide difference if you ask me.

We even get locals telling us to stop telling outsiders about what we have here, because they don't want them coming here. Want it all for themselves. These are mostly people who have never traveled more than 50 miles from home, or if they did go farther, didn't like anything about it.

our trouble is 50% of the people who live here are retired - jobs have no value to them they have their pensions and like it nice and quiet and the shops not full of people etc - they don't understand there won't be any shops and restaurants they like so much if they can't make a living!
25% are over 50 so don't want noise, mess and large crowds
therefore the 25% minority who have to make a living from it are fighting against a majority who don't and elect people who represent their views.

I totally understand. We have a lot of old people here. After being told for years tht there was nothing here for them, most of the kids left.
I was at a "training" a few years ago and the lunch speaker said something that has resonated ever since. To paraphrase, she said - Do not concentrate your efforts on your A & B students because they will leave. It is your D & F students who will stay. THEY are your future leaders in the community because they will stay. They have nowhere else to go.

feel that's a bit harsh - in the UK they all stay can't afford not to move back in with their parents - £40,000 debt from unit and £100,000 for a cheap 1 bed flat or £500 a month for rent plus bills - they don't have a lot of choice!

Actually it is the truth here. Those that go to college and get a degree they can actually get a job with, do for the most part, move away. They also have huge school loan debt, but most other States have higher wages BUT also higher cost of living which most do not think about until they are there. They only see the $50k or $100k annual salary. Here they try to get out on their own ASAP (in WV anyway).

here there are no 100k jobs you need a degree to work front desk in a hotel - massive over qualification situation

Thank you. I know the jerk is a jerk.
IF I have guests on a Council night. I may wear my apron as I am flying out of the house at the last minute (but often wear it out when shopping). He once came to a Council meeting wearing a burgundy bib apron like mine to mock me. When I walked in Council Chambers and saw it, I said, "Nice apron, Willard, it just needs the Gillum House logo on it."
I will have a Police escort for any future elections however. Will not leave it open to jerks again.

Good plan. Sometimes elections brings out the worst in people. If you get to know the sister who was elected, perhaps you will have a private moment to share the gist of the rude comments from her brother. It really does reflect badly on her as well as him.
Oh good grief...I posted before I read your comments on the sister. Hopeless case, that one. Looks like you have a tough 4 years ahead.
