It's the time of year when things that the guests do are starting to get to me....
Today, a guest had cleared off a lovely wood and glass table... to put their nasty luggage on top. There are two luggage racks in the room, one set out, one in the closet. Okay, so maybe you missed the one in the closet... but on a glass table? Really? (I just moved the luggage from the table. It's scratched to hell and ruined.) Guest is the kind that never seems happy... left my breakfast in pieces mostly without eating it, even though I told her it didn't contain her allergen. Asked if there was another guest in the room next to them. Need extra AC. Extra fan. Complained about the garage. Can't seem to do anything right for her. Oh, complained about chipped cup.... sorry, they are a very old set... maybe 70 years old... they have a few chips.
A few days ago it was the Nutella... almost a whole jar in 3 days. Complained that I couldn't give the room they wanted in spite of the fact that it was booked by someone else, before them and they knew about it.
Oh and the number of guests who can't follow the instructions for the doors in the last few days. Hangry people, cranky, ill-contented... should I put a Snickers bar on their pillows? Oh, I have a GF/VG coming for 2 days.... always fun. If it isn't bad enough trying to handle GF, we have to combine it. Same time we have a GF/LactoseF (but repeat guest... always happy with what I make for their diet) and a dairy-free (allergy). Can I just make the GF/VG a smoothie with some fruit and call it a day?
Thankfully, we have a few repeat guests coming who are usually nice to have back in the house and make me feel like I'm going a good job, instead of a horrible job and can't please anyone.

Lovely repeat guest last week drove her luggage across the bed leaving 2 grease marks on the quilt. We have luggage racks and that room has a shelf, at the correct height for opening luggage, in the closet.
My recently repainted dressers are all chipped and stained again. Why do guests put wet, syrupy drinks on the furniture without a coaster?
But, it's kind of quiet this week, so I'm recovering from the grumpiness.

I wish I was. Forgot to mention, another guest went into our liquor cabinet and finished off the remnants of three bottles.... at least it was like 2 fingers in each bottle... and then put the empty bottles back. Who does that?
This guest seems to be from the ME ME ME ME ME ME generation, just doesn't seem to care about anyone else. I'm seething, so trying not to talk to her, or I may just explode.

People who spill water on the unit and then............... just leave it, people who put two cups and two mugs down the the unit and manage not to get a single one on a coaster or one of the the two table mats, surely even by random probability they have to get at least 1 on a coaster. People who moan that there is nowhere for them to sit inside or outside and eat food brought in from shops, even though it clearly says on website that we have just bedrooms and breakfast room. People who hang around the house all day, for heavens sake, you've come all this way, half way round the world to one of the most beautiful countries in the world, the sun is shinning and now all you want to do is sit in the room.

I'm laughing bc I'm right there with you all! Misery loves company.

Generic, I used to have a very delicate coffee table in one of the rooms. There are 2 luggage racks in each room, too. I realize signs are tacky, but I resorted to placing a picture of a suitcase with a slash through it on the table, with text that said "FRAGILE! Please don't set luggage here!" after one of the table's legs broke off. Sadly, the table was banged around so much that after a while it had to be put out to pasture.
Morticia, I feel your pain. I know my eyes get wide and my jaw drops whenever a guest slings their suitcase on top of the bed immediately after walking into their room (I'm not good at presenting a "poker face"). It's 10x worse when it's on a light-colored comforter. Maybe I should just gasp in shock and they might get the hint.
Highlands John, you've been cracking me up with your recent posts!

It's in the room you were in. I'm contemplating getting glass covers for every damn surface in every room and a little tacky sign on it that says "glass - you break it, you bought it!"
What the heck is wrong with people? Can I just come over to their home and treat them the same way? Do they expect that they are owed to break furniture, disrespect people and that it's normal? WTF happened to people's sense. Maybe this is the result of people being kicked off of Air for violating other people's property.

We once went to clean a room and they'd put a teapot on the wooden surface, it was stuck and left a big, white ring.
DH was so furious he challenged them at breakfast next morning ( not in front of others) and asked them not to do it again.
They had the gaul to say they didn't do it and said how careful they are about putting things on wood.

I ridden on cruise ships that, when you arrive, have a large piece of leather thrown across the bed with the word "Luggage" on it. It does get across the messages that a) they know you're going to throw your luggage on the bed and b) they want to protect the bedspread.

Generic - almost every single piece of furniture in our B&B has a glass top that was specifically cut to fit it. If by chance the surface isn't covered by glass, I have a set of coasters on top of it. Guests manage to damage the only surfaces *not* covered by glass.
For white rings, I gently scrub with baking soda & then use "liquid gold" to rehydrate the wood. Works pretty well, but be careful bc scrubbing too much with the baking soda can remove the wood's finish.

I sure don't hesitate to leave details on Air if they do something damaging - like wipe a face full of make-up, tanning lotion and who knows what else on an all white bathrobe??? Why do I even put out the washcloths that are embroidered "MAKEUP" and have nice cosmetic wipes tucked in them. They got a review worthy of their stay and I selected the "thumbs down" when asked if I would recommend them to anyone else...

Good for you! I wish we were able to publicly review our guests on TA, Yelp, or google. I report all problem guests on HotelChek, but no one but the innkeepers see the reviews. I've only ever blasted one Air guest. Single guest with local friends, she tried to sneak a dog in her room, had a guy napping in her bed when she asked me to bring up fresh towels, and practically threw the keys at me when she was leaving. I left a review stating all of the above, then she replied saying I was homophobic bc she's a lesbian. (with a guy in her bed?) Her review of my place was actually pleasant, which I did not expect. I called Air and requested that they remove both of our reviews bc her response was inflammatory. Surprisingly, Air actually honored my request so neither reviews are visible, tho I can still see my review of her in my "host back office" setting.

Get thin acrylic. Material is more expensive, but any handyman can cut to size, round corners and smooth edges so it is a fast in-home fix it job.

Me, I feel like plastic scratches easier than glass and can get a hazy look, however unless spending tons for tempered glass I might be concerned about the liability of a guest breaking the glass and getting injured.
Of course I don't know your furnishing, my room furnishing are not valuable antiques, but what about a couple of coats of a satin finish poly on the tops, it is much more durable than normal furniture finish and most spills just wipe up, I use on my personal eating table and furnishing where I sit my own sweaty glass.

My recently repainted dressers are all chipped and stained again. Why do guests put wet, syrupy drinks on the furniture without a coaster?
But, it's kind of quiet this week, so I'm recovering from the grumpiness..

Wish I was too.

Get thin acrylic. Material is more expensive, but any handyman can cut to size, round corners and smooth edges so it is a fast in-home fix it job.
.
Will it clean just as well? Get scratched easily?
.
Me, I feel like plastic scratches easier than glass and can get a hazy look, however unless spending tons for tempered glass I might be concerned about the liability of a guest breaking the glass and getting injured.

I find that the shininess of glass helps us tell if a surface has been sufficiently cleaned.
