We have a 10th guestroom that we use when the first 9 are filled, and when not occupied we use it as a study.
http://phineasswann.com/rooms-rates/common-areas/the-birch-room/
It's our smallest room with on ensuite bathroom with shower. In the past, we've used a twin daybed with trundle. Currently we have two rollaway beds that get wheeled in and the two sitting chairs get hauled out. I want to find a bed that:
  • Is as comfortable as a traditional bed,
  • Is removable (i.e. it can be taken out of the room and the two sitting chairs currently there returned.
  • Can be configured either as two twins or joined together to make a single bed.
Am I chasing a unicorn here? Or does someone know of something that might fit the bill. My ideal is to build a Murphy bed/ bookcase combination into the wall so it can stay out of the way until needed. Unfortunately, that ideal solution is outside the range of my capabilities and budget.
Any suggestions out there?

Well your ideal plan was the one I thought of as I was reading your post.
I found the bed working parts fairly inexpensive online when I was looking at the possibility of the same type of plan. You may even be able to do make it in sections, like adding the bookcases at a later date.
If this is something you could not do on your own, you may be able to find some one that likes to do something on the side.

Do you need that study? Is it worth just converting it to a full time guest room?

There is a company that makes a bed that folds into the size of the an ottoman. So you can leave them like poufs in the room.
Have you considered a wall bed? Very popular here. Not that expensive. (And I'm sure you can even order it from here.)
Then there are the beds from Resource Furniture. There is a model called the Swing 0 or the Ulisse that might be interesting for you. Has a sofa that can quickly convert to a queen bed.

NOOOO! Don't get that one! We have one and call it, The Bed from Hell. It's hard to move around. Scraps floors. Pinch fingers. Have to put a blanket under the sheets to make it comfortable and then the sheets don't want to fit right. Its the last cot to be used always!
Oh, wait a minute, you want to buy it off us?

I know people up your way who comes down this way who might be talked into delivering it to you.

Odd. We had one at my grandparent's place that was excellent. Maybe the manufacturing isn't what it used to be.

Could be a different company, etc. All I know we don't like it one bit!

Love the concept of the transforming furniture. I most likely would not love the price. But great in small places that need to serve as more than one use.
I was just looking at an ottoman in the Tue sday Morning mail out. Not a bad price $199 but the mattress does look thin. Says the bed opens to 71"x37"x18"

There are lots of Murphy bed set ups out there if you do a search. Those work nicely and have a decent mattress in them. Maybe IKea?

Do you need that study? Is it worth just converting it to a full time guest room?.
Good question, Mort. We do use it as our downstairs bathroom for guests that are at breakfast or when we have events, so we can't just make it a permanent room. It's the least-used room in the house, but since it's our only downstairs bath, it's important.

Ah yes. The event bathroom.
Foldout couch? No need to move furniture around.

Most fold out couches are the pits!

Check out IKEA. We have 2 sofa with chaise units. It's not the traditional sofa bed. The bottom of the sofa part pulls out, then the back folds down. We then put a feather bed on top of it and it's pretty darn comfortable.

Right but he's dragging cots in there now. It's a last minute room, not one of the premium rooms.

Looks like the ones from bedderway come without a mattress and you go buy one somewhere, up to 12" thick, with no box springs needed. So should be quite comfortable, even for multiple nights, and standard sheets will fit them.
I currently use sofabeds with a 1" foam topper for occasional extra's in the room, and they aren't too bad for a night or two, but I'd hate to sleep on one for a longer period. And their mattresses are so thin fitted sheets are useless on them.
I may eventually sell the sofas and get Murphy beds in their place.

this is what I would love - aparently takes the weight of an elephant - german engineering - not cheap but excellent - http://www.voga.si/en/products/other-products/lift-bed

I agree! We had them for a few years til someone broke one when not knowing how to fold it back, used bruit force and bent the working mechanisms. We had to rush out and buy a day bed with trundle & twin sheets.

I should have mentioned futons. But not the standard ones that you see. Futon D'or have frames that make sofa beds out of futons. But they also see a futon with springs. Not as durable as a standard futon "mattress" but definitely more comfortable. Easily converts to a double sized bed. (They do single and queen, but they don't look as good as sofa/chair). Solid wood, made in Canada, even choose colour and finish. Buy two covers. Easily washable too. Put a waterproof mattress protector on when used as bed. Otherwise, no one will even notice it's a bed and it's very comfortable. (Sorry didn't think of this earlier)
