we are across the street from the ocean. specifically, across the street from two houses that are on the ocean. But the house has an ocean view through those two houses.
a guy bought one of the houses and started construction. we learned yesterday that he is putting copper siding and roofing on the whole house. we are livid. this is a town people visit in order to see old New England. the description most often used is 'quaint.' This ummmmm, 'neighbor' just changed his house from part of a quaint seaside view to a focal point ruining the view.
Oh well. I told my husband, better to be surrounded by tacky Mcmansions by the sea than many places.

I'm surprised a place like that doesn't have laws in place to protect the views and historic look that's so important to the town's success.

Arks, there is an historic district in place, but it doesn't cover the whole town. Just the downtown area.

Copper siding...they must be millionaires to afford that.. Better watch out...copper thieves will be ripping it off.

You betcha they will! A couple of years ago some yahoos ripped off the historic copper gutters on the whaling captain's house across the street. That is a Federal building and so is a federal crime. Talk about stupid...they also ripped off the historic plaque on our house...with our name on it...and got picked up by the police within 2 days. Our plaque nailed them.
So cheer up Beachie, maybe they will rethink it once they realize what they are in for!

Interesting. There are copper thieves in town. They periodically steal copper wires from the train station. hmmmm.

I'm surprised you weren't notified of the construction - I assume they're not changing the 'footprint'?
How about the good neighbor approach? Contact the owner and introduce yourself. Ask what his/her/their plans are. The person who told you might be misinformed or it might be treated to green early (but it takes a while). Or you might like how it looks. Siding and roofing ... in copper. I haven't seen that. The whole house?

We were notified. First by the owner and then by the town. The owner left out a couple of details. Like what he was really planning. He expanded the house and changed it quite a bit. We were told he was raising it away from the flood line.

Where's my dislike button?

Every so often we hear on the morning news about some "brain trust" who got electrocuted stealing copper wire from a coal mine or a facility of some kind. That family had best NEVER go away for a weekend or a vacation. If it is really copper rather than copper-colored metal.

It's a weekend place. They are rarely there.

Ah, so they can afford to lose the siding and roofing. ;-)

it's the lament of many seaside towns. the people who can, come in to live there because it is such a beautiful place. then they wreck it by building too big or too many or, in this case, too fancy.
think the mansions on Nantucket. we don't want to be that. we like our seaside town.

I used to live on Nantucket ... Still love it. But always hear the lament for the way it used to be.

The story of bucolic America. Chicago passed thru NW Illinois on the way to Wisconsin and say how pretty and peaceful it was. Started buying up farmland. The fields my kids picked tomatoes with me in have long since grown houses. And now there are strip malls for their import foods and their Fivebucks. The commuter railroad extend service out to them because there were so many. No longer bucolic, no longer quiet.

I moved to this place because of the lake views and small town. But in the past few years our neighbors next door both left side and right have grown their tree so high we cannot see the views of the lake.
The right side has some messy trees that end up marking our lawn furniture and making a mess of the seats. We have to sweep every day the new rug looks so bad as it pods/ flowers are staining the carpet.
Then the other left side he has cedars that are so high our guest seating on the balcony cannot see the lake very well, as the trees are grown so high and wide.
Then the neighbor behind our house has planted a large cherry tree and it is so big we cannot see around it plus his bamboo hedge is also tall. that neighbor behind us has smaller trees planted all down his property that a low cherry trees. But this one he has allowed to grow so big. The worst part of it is It will devalue our property. Which we had hoped to sell next year.
We are both concerned if we say any thing that might start hard feeling? Which would not be a good thing.

Re the hedge: Does your town have an ordinance about the height of fences and hedges? Ours does.

Nope ! not even what they can store in the yards. Unless it is in towns property. then that is a whole can of different worms...
