We found a wasp or hornet nest the size of a soccer ball in one of our deciduous bushes.
Can we get rid of it? Are they heavy sleepers? Or should we hire it out?

Don't get rid of it, kill it. Wasp spray will do it, if you can get it right in the hole. But leave it in place. Wasps are territorial, so as long as it's around, you won't get more.

I'd call a professional. Had one and some guests got stung. Worth every penny to have it safely removed.

You found this now, in January, when the temperatures have been below freezing? If they are even in there, the wasps are likely to be pretty sluggish at these temperatures. It is outdoors, right?
(In our state, for indoor pests, as a commercial lodging property, we have to use a licensed professional pesticide applicator, or if we DIY, the room has to remain vacant for at least 7 days following the pesticide application)
