Innkeeping story on sidebar

As much as the powers that be tell me I will click and buy on the left and right sides of any website, I forget to look here. I just saw an "innkeeping story" with the name Roosevelt. I clicked on it.
This line jumped off the page and made me chuckle "...my wife looks over at this giant farm house and she says “Wouldn’t it be nice in our retirement years to just buy something like that and run it as a bed and breakfast.”
Nice in our retirement. I wonder how many people think running an inn is not a lot of work? Is that some koolaid we all have hidden so well? "Ehhh retire, run an inn, ahhhhh sit on the porch sipping martinis, it's easy!"
I better read the rest now, I am sure they either:
a) sold the koolaid, after all they don't want anyone to know how it really is and blow our cover, or b) said it was a wake up call.

EXCELLENT article! I appreciated how they opened up their personal/marital stresses with owning a business, working together and how to make it all work.
It's a breath of fresh air after reading all those other articles which paint a perfect picture, like the one in Maine who invited strangers off the street to visit with them.

Yep...It's 2:30 here, expecting a full house to start checking in any minute and I'm on the internet to avoid falling asleep

I'm so glad they told the real story - that it's difficult to be an innkeeper, it can ruin your marriage if you're not careful and innkeepers don't get lots of vacations and naps. We're heading off on vacation for 10 days and we're losing a huge amount of income. But if we didn't, our kids wouldn't get a summer vacation and we'd lose our mind. I can't imagine anyone doing this as retirement (unless they have tons of help).

The Roosevelt Inn is actually a fascinating turn-around story -- I'm glad someone took the time to write about it. What they left out of the story (on purpose I'm pretty sure) is that Gordon Ramsay did his best to make them look absolutely terrible on Hotel Hell. I wouldn't recommend anyone be on that show as they create drama out of think air. That was the low point -- everything from there has been one improvement after another. With regard to running an inn I'll repeat what I've said for twenty years now which started when innkeepers kept asking me what the name of my inn was (as you couln't possibly market inns without being an innkeeper!): "I've seen your job and I don't want it -- you guys work way too hard!"
