"that's too much to spend on a B&B"
From someone who can't get a room at a hotel that charges $400/night.
If it's not the right fit, try another hotel. Don't say it's too expensive for a B&B. (Btw, less than half the price.)

We get this in my town as most of the B&B's out rank the hotels on tripadviser and a good chunk charge more as are a better quality, service and breakfast. However I know people like that arn't a good fit for us so encourage them to book elsewhere.
Now we are hopefully a week away from next door I have to be strict about min nights, prices etc I have to keep saying it "NO MORE LAME DUCKS!" that you don't have enough money is not my problem!

Yep it is a certain mind set.
Had an anniversary couple this weekend. If he called me once, he called me a dozen times and even came by twice before check in.
He wanted everything perfect.
He ordered red roses. Wanted candles and rose petals too. I added battery candles and silk rose pedals in the form of hearts on the pillows along with sprinkles of pedals on the bed. He loved the added touches.
Her comment the next morning at check out? Well this was different, never thought I would be paying to stay in someone else's home. And now I know that I like Eggs Benedict before I pay for them at a restaurant.

Guess I've stayed at the wrong hotel/motels, I would have expected them to be cheaper.

I would have upped my price in a heartbeat. Sorry, $200 is too much? I just sold that room. I have another at $250. Well, the next town that has a room is just 100 miles away. Have a nice day.

Do you really say those things or is that the voice in your head? Sometimes I would like to say it....but call me whimp...I just send them on their way.

I have REALLY sent people to some of the worst places when they have been rude on the telephone. I have also told them that you get what you pay for and then given them what's in their price range, even if it is a place I would never stay. (Yes, I have sent people there, just tell them to read the reviews... but it's in their price range.)

Phone call from a potential guest inquiring about staying with us. Complained about the price, then wanted early check in and late check out. I was polite, stuck to my price, and was negotiating the early check-in and late check out times, when he asked for something more. That was enough for me. Phone call continued as follows:
Me: Oh, excuse me, but did you say you wanted to stay this weekend?
Him: Yes.
Me: Oh, I'm so sorry but I misunderstood you. We're full this weekend.
Long, silent pause.
Him: I blew it didn't I?
Me: Yes. Yes you did. But there's a lovely half-star motel in the next town.
Him: Long sigh. S**t.
Bye bye.

I have to ask, what was the extra request?
I also have to say, wow, that was a good way to manage your own life. Impressed.

I don't remember because it was a while ago, but I could tell that he was going to be one of those guests who just keeps asking for more and wouldn't be happy with any of it.

I once had someone ask me for the cheapest place to stay during the most expensive weekend in the city. I told him to stay in the town on the other side of the border.
Luckily, there is a long list of horrible places to stay around here. They make us good places worth all that much more. And there is at least one B&B in town that fakes it's reviews, which makes those who are honest, look better.

Love the review that included a picture of the rat trap under their bed.

We had someone stay with us this week who works in a hotel, she said she was a bit embarrassed to admit that all the B&Bs they'd stayed in during their Scottish holiday had been much better than the hotel, and much cheaper too.
