Guess for the most part we are simple folks and never frequented the sort of places where the giving and receiving of tips was the norm. As operators of a tiny mom and pop motel finding a tip in a guest room is rare, but then guests know that we do it all ourselves. I'm more impressed if a guest leaves a complimentary note or posts a favorable review online..

The Question
Jim, may I ask you a question - I realize you are in one of the most popular road tripping area of the U.S. but have you considered adding online reservations? You would be surprised at how many people would love this amenity for their trip planning. Especially coming from diff parts of the country and world. It would also give you an extra abundance of time to use yourselves or on your business.
Tipping
Without a reminder of a tip envelope in a motel/hotel it is outa sight outa mind, fyi. I know this may not be something you are interested in doing, but once you have them, you may be surprised. Don't undersell, don't fell you are unable to accept being owners, you aren't in this "for the fun" you are a business.
Conclusion
There I shared my 2 cents. If you want to see how easy online reservation can be, please visit any one of our sites who use reservationkey.com I believe your property would be $25 a month, and almost all other online program charge way way more than that! Ease of use will surprise you.
Here is a mom and pop motel in Colorado that contacted me two years ago about rezkey - my parents stayed there and told them to call me as even my parents, the internet-phobes wanted to reserve online. Check out their online page, they fought it forever and had so many questions, resp about motorcyclists - as they have a big event there.

We put a cute "Thank You" note card in each room with it sliding out of the envelope. Inside the card is a post-it for suggestions, comments, etc.. We have a message for them about hoping they enjoyed their stay and have a safe trip home. (hand written and signed) Often the tips are in the envelope or where the envelope was. People love them so we have a big box of them since we have to replace them in the rooms quite often. Or they write us a nice note back. When I'm having a bad day, its nice to read their notes in the cards.

C'mon! No restaurants? No haircuts? No hotels?
You've been somewhere that tipping was common unless you've never been out of the house. ;-)
.
Ok Morticia I'll reveal all my little secrets and you can have your laugh for the day.
Restaurants, yes the usual 10 to 20 percent depending on the type of place and service, but a five dollar takeout pizza or a fast food burger would be a more typical Sunday treat after we finish cleaning rooms.
Haircuts, I think the last time I was in a barber shop a haircut it was 85 cents, no tip required, for the last forty years or so my hair has been cut at home.
Hotels, back in the 60's the company where I worked lodged us is that sort of hotel, but no that's not my usual type of travel.

I like the idea of a thank you card and the request for comment and suggestions as it seems much more caring than a request for a tip. I'm usually cleaning rooms as guests are departing so try to open a conversation and thank them for staying with us and wish them a safe trip home.

Hi Joey, online reservations sound like a good idea, Gilliamhouse also has made this suggestion to me, just not sure how it fits us as Maxine is not a computer person, after 52 years together I've learned I'm unlikely to change her opinions. There is a chance our daughter and son-in-law may have an interest in joining us in this endeavor, if so the idea may be more practical in the future.
Tipping, well we are a business and it has to pay our way, but it's no good if it isn't also fun. I feel like most of our guests chose us as a reasonable choice and sort of hate to push them to tip, but I do like Duff's idea of a thank you note and if it reminds them gently to tip then all well and good.

I completely understand.
The tipping thing is something I was against for many years, but with my daughter helping me in the rooms now, oddly enough she is quite for it! :)
I also agree with the fun, I may agree more than you realize. It is hard to share things here for the most part that get that point across, but if YOU are here, then you are able to handle online reservations easy peasy. That was the example I gave you, they were very unsure of this and in fact said they like to field the guests and I said "Have you ever told one, sorry I don't like you, no room." We think we have that control, but in reality the online reserved guests have always been hands down the best guests for us. And those are the old, the young and the inbetweeners.
Let us know when the time comes should they come on board, we are here to help.

Don't get me wrong, I generally like computers, if all reservations were online it might be easy enough, but present reservations are in a notebook form, it would concern me trying to keep the two systems in sync as I still work another job on a part time basis.
No I don't think I ever told a potential guest "I don't like you", but I have suggested that we may not be the best choice to fill their needs, that may be easier on the telephone.

Just back from hotel stay of 2 nights in high end hotel on Newbury St in the big town. We got a decent rate (50% for second night) for a nice suite with a wood burning fireplace, which was a nice touch since we were snowed in for 2 days while we were there. Immaculate rooms, refreshed 2x day. Plenty of everything with 2 big high def TVs and free wifi...continental breakfast included ($24 per day credit toward anything on the breakfast menu)
Basically we tipped for everything. DH got used to me kicking him to remind him to tip: the porter, the wood butler, the massage lady, housekeeping, the driver of the hotel's complimentary car service, the guy who retrieved DH's hat from the valet parking, valet parking, the guy who got us a cab and the young woman at the front desk who was sooooo kind and gave us a late check-out until 3:00 pm on the day of the surgery. Along with tipping the wait service at the hotel and restaurant we spent what amounts to another lodging night in tips and parking.
Let me tell you. It was a wonderful stay and we did indeed make lemonade out of the lemon....but it weren't cheap! Gives me a whole new appreciation for what we offer, inclusive..
Have you ever noticed that no one tips us for any of that? Not even for housekeeping.
I've never gotten a tip for hauling a 40 lb suitcase up 2 flights of stairs. Not for bringing extra towels. Putting flowers in the room. You name it. Never.
In the course of a year we *might* see $200 in tips left in the rooms.
.
If anyone is going to tip it is the young couple who have never before stayed at a B+B. We get around the no-tip by building our tip into our rates. That way we are sure to get what we deserve for all of our hard work.
wink_smile.gif

For us, getting a great review posted on line is worth more than a tip of a few dollars. I am not bashful about asking our guests (only those who I think would like to return) to submit a review on TA. It is worth its weight in gold to us to be #1 in our town.

How could you ever NOT be #1 you are awesome. Even without power and snow drifts.

$5/day is my usual amount if everything is done up to par. I will tip more if the room is spotless and obviously well attended to! I have left the tip at the end of the stay - you bring up a good point, so I'll adjust that!

If you stay at a place with an honor bar in the room be sure to either hand the tip to the housekeeper or put it under the pillow.
The person who checks the honor bar often walks off with the tip.

Haven't stayed at a place with an honor bar since I booked a stay in a metropolitan swank Lowes Hotel for my dh for Fathers' Day a couple of years back. I do always write a note and fold it over the tip though.
btw - for B&B tipping, if it's a super experience I will always tip more (because I've been there, done that) or I will live a small gift or gift card or gift/tip combo. Kind of what whim strikes me.....

$5 down if the bed is made and the toilet/shower clean. - $10 dollars a day for anything more.
Here at our place we get in about $0--$20 dollars a day. $5 is the standard mostly. One guy was here for one night ( quiet type who wants to be left alone. He and his wife came about 4 times in 2014) and left the housekeeper a twenty dollar bill. But then not one person in the whole month of September tipped!
If you know you are going to a local private owned B&B, tip like you do at a hotel. Yes, I know you don't have to tip the owner but do it anyways..

But you aren't a hotel. right? a B&B is much more personal.
and then I read the rest of what you wrote, I am positive she is not asking about tipping at a B&B.
I will stop writing as I read and eating a frozen burrito.

Yes, we are a B&B. I heard people say that they don't have to tip a B&B because the people own it so they get all the money anyways. Another one admitted that is why they go to upscale B&B instead of hotels........ (overheard at Starbucks)

They go to B&B's so they don't have to tip?
We do tell our housekeeper to be sure she gets here during breakfast so guests can see she drove up. That way they don't think she's our daughter. They definitely don't tip us.

That's what they were talking about. I just gripped my drink a little tighter and made sure they weren't from my place.
I love it about them seeing the maid drive in!

Oh JB you are just too sweet. Believe me, you wouldn't think I was so awesome if you saw me now with a nose that looks like a railroad track and a black eye that makes me look like I was hit by a train! But this too shall pass and hopefully, by the time we reopen in April I won't be scaring the guests away. Maybe I'll even get a tip?
And for a minor sidetrack...By the way, another big blizzard scheduled for this weekend out here.

We have been alternating between sun, snow, and whiteout then back to sun all day. Real windy. Tonight it is supposed to go down to 5 so guess who will be ironing tonight. May as well do something useful.

And ironing will keep you warm as well! Made a big pot of soup today to have on hand just in case we get a sequel to the last big storm. Batten down and hope for an early spring.

Getting ready to ride out the storm too! Hold tight!

Thaw it first, it is way easier to chew.

I keep seeing this topic when I log in. Being from the midwest, I'm reminded of cow tipping
