Freaking Out!

A few weeks ago, we came home to find a guest using our coffee pot to boil water on the stove. It's a metal carafe and I freaked. Still not sure if it did damage, as it isn't made to be put on the stove.
Well, a few minutes ago, I walk out of the office, where I went to fill in some of the paperwork, to find a guest has gone through the fridge, taken out our eggs and is making themselves breakfast... because she slept in... and missed breakfast. And I'm a freaking mess.... WTF! Over 25 years in this business and this is the first time that a guest has, as far as I know, thought it was appropriate to actually use our food and make themselves something.
I'm freaked out. I'm not sure what to do. I told her immediately that she can't cook in our kitchen. And I made the egg for her, but she walked off and it's now on the table, getting cold. But I still can't regain my composure. I'm livid. What the heck is wrong with people...do you walk into a hotel kitchen and just start to help yourself?

I had a guest shove me out of the way in our first months here. He dove into the fridge to get the eggs saying I didn't know how he liked them. There is about 2 feet of space between the fridge and the stove where Gomez was standing. I thought he was going to slap the guy.
The guy sulked all thru breakfast after I told him to go sit down.
I totally understand.

Yup. That’s why we installed a lock on the door between the guest living room and the breakfast room, which is adjacent to our kitchen. Some people think a B&B is like staying with a friend...the air “sharing” thing. Sorry this invasion into your privacy ever happened. But can’t say it won’t happen again

When you show guests how to get to the patio how do you explain the off limits of the kitchen? Is there any kind of signage to remind them when they are faint with hunger because they slept in?
We have 2 signs AND a 'velvet rope' to block passage. Unless everything is in place guests think it's ok to go in the kitchen at noon because the sign doesn't go up until after we're done in the kitchen.

I would have told her that Provincial health regulations require anyone in the kitchen to be screened for infectious disease and that you would have to draw a blood sample from her before she could cook her egg.

I asked Specific to clear it up with them... instead he APOLOGIZED. I'm like... there was nothing to apologize for! You apologize for how they took it, or how they feel... but you don't help yourself to someone else's food and kitchen.

In any case, they leave today. If they review, the reply won't look good. I filled in the form on BK to report misbehaviour.

I agree that is would be best to explain as you are passing the kitchen to show the patio. BTW....
A reminder on the kitchen fridge may help, though Mort didn't have much luck with that when she had one up.

When I married Himself, he had an old Norge refrigerator - the one with the rounded corners so you know how OLD it was. Most likely it was while his first wife was in the hospital, no one remembered to defrost it and the door came off the freezer and the latch also broke. He fixed it (hey! it was still running!) by mounting a hasp on the refrigerator to hold it closed. He said we would replace it when it died. A friend bought a new fridge and gave me her old one - it refused to die!
Suggestion, install a hasp and a padlock on the refridgerator. Better make it a combo lock though - my freaking kids used to pick the lock on our bedroom door to see if they could safely lift a can of olives or someother item we did not dare leave on the pantry shelves - so enterprising guests do not pick the lock.

I still have it up. And another one saying 'STOP!' And a physical barrier as well.
But, this situation is one where the guest felt too at home. Or, the 'air' mindset of 'I'm sharing the house, I guess everyone else made their own breakfast, too.
