First day on the job

Ever have one of those days where you feel like it's your first day and you don't know how to 'do' innkeeping?
We cannot seem to make a connection with these guests. It's like everything we do is the wrong thing or just not enough.
They took 3 rooms, all upstairs. One of them can barely walk. We upgraded them to rooms with easy access.
They barely touched breakfast. They don't talk to us. They want to do things that are miles away and they don't have a car. They want to do things that are over for the season.
It's like everything they want they can't have.

Sounds like they are looking for a hotel experience rather than the personal attention provided by a B&B. You already upgraded them because they booked cheaper rooms. I'm sure the descriptions for those rooms included the words, "On the second (or third) floor." You started off their stay on the right foot. There are some guests that we can never please, no matter how hard we try.
It also sounds like they didn't do any research for their vacation! Wow. Are they just staying 2 nights? If they didn't touch breakfast, I would be tempted to ask if they would prefer a lighter breakfast of just fruit & muffins for tomorrow. I hate seeing food wasted.

People from away often have no idea about the size of a state like ours, or the nature of the seasons here, and how that might impact the availability of certain things. I mean, Disney Land is open all year round, why shouldn't Vacationland be? (well, it is, just different types of vacation activities available during the different seasons).

Funny thing is, why wouldn't a tour of a factory be open all year, right? Well, because no one else is looking for factory tours now, that's why. There are probably 3 people working there year round.

Even those of us who should know better don't think ahead, I went north a number of years ago expending the area to be dead as our was at the time, ended up with last grungy basement motel room in town, but I'll remember to ask next time.

I hope you’re not apologizing for things that are out of your control. Yesterday I had a guest tell me that Newfoundland was ‘now closed’. Well... the ocean is still there, the fall colours are at their peak, the hiking trails are still open. I can still tell you where to find music and live entertainment.
Sometimes people just want things handed to them on a silver platter. Too bad, so sad.
Still busy, even though I really don’t want to be. So looking forward to two weeks in Texas at the end of November. Are you taking off soon Mort?

We're open til the end of the year.
What I try to do is point guests to things that are still open. But, when they insist that they read it somewhere, I leave them to it.
We get that same thing after Labor Day in September - everyone thinks the state closes and that prices should be rock bottom.
