We only had one check in yesterday. They had visited a few times before and are friends with a couple who live up the street.
I saw the car come in and waited. And waited..... and checked in the front room. They had gone into their room and were talking in there.
I laughed. They did 'check in' about 20 minutes later. They were so comfortable, they just went to 'their' room first and checked in after they got settled.
I like it.

On the other hand, we hosted a couple from this town who needed to be out of their house for four days for a home repair. They booked the cheapest room (of course) and we upgraded them to a bigger bed and better bathroom.
He went to work early, so we put out breakfast early every day. She stayed in and 'hosted' friends who would have coffee and finish off the cookies and muffins. DH chatted with them several times.
They left without saying goodbye, did not leave a tip and even took our key!
I thought it was pretty rude after we were beyond accommodating.

Ah but they would see it as "we don't tip our friends" also many people never think of tiping the owner only staff as we are apparently absolutely coining it.

.
Agree. The tip was secondary. I really think they should have said goodbye and thank you.
Kind of creepy that they just disappeared.

We have guests who let themselves in, but they let us know right away.
We did have guests a long time ago, before we had the coded door lock, who let themselves in, changed clothes and went out for dinner without ever telling us they were in the house. We were waiting for them. Finally noticed there were lights on in the room, went to check, clothes strewn everywhere.
We locked the door and waited for them to return. They were pretty snarky with us. Then they took all the hangers when they checked out. (Side note - they brought them back a few years later, and they rang the bell next time!)

They don't get that we could be out to dinner or in the hot tub or taking a shower or calling our sister or taking a walk or jog - if we weren't waiting for a check in.

I aways say "simon might be making himself a cup of tea in his pants" - the concept that we might have a private life escapes them!
I always joke about Lord Harewood as they shut the estate for about 2 month in the winter (big stately home) that its when he runs round the house in his pants because its free of guests! its what I would do! if you ever fancy seeing its its Brideshead revisited that's where it was filmed. His lordship is super cool - investing in bio technology to help make the estate viable for the future generations and so on always working hard and I dread to think the money it takes to keep that place running!

Wow, beach house. Interesting that you like it, I wouldn't because I would want to know everything's all set. After a few mishaps the first season, I didn't leave rooms unlocked so it couldn't happen.
What did happen to me was people would leave without letting me know. They'd leave some time in the night or while I was serving breakfast .. who knows? I'd go to their room because breakfast was almost over and find them gone ... keys on the nightstand or in the door. I wouldn't know if there was a problem, if someone was sick, if they hated my place, if they had planned to leave in the middle of the night all along. Or what. If they did plan to leave early, it would be helpful to know so I wouldn't expect them at breakfast. I thought about tracking them down to ask and then decided I'd let it go.

I would have a cow! I want to know who is in my house and when someone is in my house.
It is different when I tell a guest that I will be somewhere and the door is unlocked and I will see you when I get home. I DO have a regular coming in January (my 2-night tax guy) while I am at a Conference. The company that is paying makes the rez. I e-mailed him, I will not be here but your room will be and I will try to leave breakfasts. He wrote back - do not worry about breakfast, just leave me the key.

We have a baby monitor in plain sight in the front hall so we know when people come and go, etc.
