Found one dead mouse in a box of some random baking supplies way in back in the pantry ... not used for about a year. Serious EEK! I didn't scream but I tossed the box and everything in it rather than look any further and I'm creeped out.
Does this mean there are probably mice running around in the pantry and elsewhere in the house? Two cats live here ... not doing the one job they have!!

He has a family somewhere, guaranteed. In these old houses, it's impossible to keep them out. I still like to use the old fashioned traps because then I can dispose of them immediately. With bait, you never know where they're going to crawl off to die.

Are there droppings in the cabinet? If not, it is probably random. We have had random mouse sightings.
We use a capture trap so you don't risk hurting your cat's paws should she dry to play with a set spring trap.
I wish all my cats did was bring me mice. My baby loves snakes. The older one is into chipmunks.

droppings ... ergh ... I will have to pull everything out to see. A big job. If I find more mice, dead or alive, you'll hear me shrieking over the internet.

We use the box trap kind with bait in - they have to go in to get it - then are poisoned and then can't get out so solves the crawling off somewhere to die and then stinking the place out problem

We are in the country and have mice dying to get in (pun intended); we set snap traps in the basement and have sealed off ways they can get into the kitchen and pantry, so we can keep them away from food prep and storage. I have to check and reset traps weekly.
I can see not wanting to use snap traps with cats around, but I would deal with that by setting trap in a shoe box with a mouse size hole. After trying many alternatives, snap traps are best: cheap, quick, very sensitive.
