Crockpot Oatmeal - got any tips?

I'm reading recipies for crockpot oatmeal and most say to cook for 6 hours. But if I go to bed at 10 and breakfast starts at 8, that's 10 hours. Do you use a crockpot? does the oatmeal last just fine for 10 - 12 hours? Do you flavor it?
Any other ideas or tips? Thanks.

I put my crockpot on a timer that we use to turn the lights on and off with when we are away for vacation. That takes care of the timing problem.

Hi,
I use Irish oats also sometimes called Steel cut 4/1 ratio (4 water/1 oats). The suggested cooking time on low that you have could be a minimum. I just put mine in before going to be 9PM ish and they are yummy in the AM. You can add and combination of flavors": 1/2 t cinnamon, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 t vanilla, 1/2 cup dried fruit (raisins, dried cranberries, dried plums, apricots...) chop the bigger ones. Add nuts in the morning if you like (1/4 cup chopped walnuts). I sometime add 1/2 sliced banana or applesauce also in the morning. You will never eat instant oatmeal again!

Great tips. Thanks. I think it's a perfect winter breakfast. We have envelopes of instand with hot water out, but I'd like to make it better.

do you put the fruit in overnight, or in the morning? (I swear I'm a practiced and good cook, but I've never made oatmeal. Ask me about my risotto!)

The Crock Pot Cereal recipe in the recipe section is very good. If you have a problem finding 7-grain cereal (I did at first) use 5-grain, it was easier to find and almost as good. The cereal is excellent also.

She also suggested chocolate chips for a mix-in. Others I've heard are raisins, cranberries, walnuts, coconut, peanut butter, pumpkin puree.

I often mix up the baked oatmeal the night before and then only have to assemble (rinse fruit, spray pan with non-stick, put in fruit and top with oatmeal mix (I usually have added the chopped fruit the night before but will add blueberries or chopped peaches to the mix before putting in pan). Saves me time so I can sleep an extra 20 minutes

We put out the oatmeal bar this past weekend and it was a big hit. I put the cooked oatmeal in the crock pot to keep it warm.
Set out rasins, brown sugar, sliced strawberries, butterscotch chips, walnuts, bananas, cinnamon, sugar, honey, maple syrup and milk.
Everyone tried it.
