I use a Hoover canister, actually, 3 of them. One permanently in the vacation rental, one for the inn rooms and one for our other city vacation rental. Love it because it picks up the hair like none other I have used plus so easy to swap out crevice tool and soft brush. Reaches high for cobweb and dust removal. Relatively light to handle and move about. But I've only used Hoover uprights and other types of canisters, so not that much variety in my experience.
So...what are your favs?

Love my Dysons. Have one rechargeable one that's light and it goes upstairs with me when I'm doing the rooms over. Only have hardwood and ceramic upstairs. I take the plug with me and plug it in as I'm doing the rooms so it can charge between jobs. Have a canister one that is permanently downstairs that does the hardwood and ceramic plus the runner in the hallway. Love that there's no bags needed and I just empty it when it's full.

I have been through lots of vacuums since two jobs in my past life, I vacuumed by the hour. These are my two favorites of all time.
Johnny Vac (Canada) Pro-It is great little blue canister that trots along behind and doesn't seem to like to hit feet. It is built just right that it climbs stairs right along behind without you needing to coax it. It takes a licking and keeps on vacuuming. CON-The cord for the powerhead runs through the hose so the hose gets clogs and the vacuum overheats. Hopefully they have fix this along the way. One of these days I will take it up north and see what they can do for me. It was here at The House when I got here.
Electrolux Upright Commercial Grade Pro…. It's perfect!…..but $$$! My first job was working at a carpet care place in VT and they sold this brand line of vacuums so we got them for our jobs. I was the newest employee so I got the bottom of the pile vacuum until my boss gave me this one. A customer had special ordered it and never came and got it.
The worst vacuum was the backpack vac….it was out to kill you! The wand would smash things, wack you in the head, and get caught on light fixtures. The vacuum wouldn't stay put on your back so it would unbalance you. The vent blew hot air down your back to name a few….. We bitterly complained about it while the boss thought it was the greatest thing on the planet until he had to do our job one night and it throw him down the flight of cement stairs. The posters and display in the sale floor came down. Last I saw it, it sat in a lonely corner collecting dust and cobwebs...

We use Shop-Vac cannisters.
(no power heads, but then we don't have carpets...)

We use a Pro Team upright, it has a hose for other areas as well and brush and nozzle, easy to swap from carpet to those other jobs we pass

I have an Electrolux upright too, love it for carpets, but doesn't get under the beds, so I don't use it every time. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'll stick with the Hoovers for the present, sounds like as good as all mentioned here.
:)

With the Electrlux I was doing offices, etc. No beds involved. The Hoover brings back happy memories of me pushing the big monster through the living room with one sister hanging on squealing for joy as we went ripping through with the others dancing around saying its their turn to ride the vacuum! It's probably sitting in a museum now.

Yeah, they don't make things like they used to! Poor children nowadays don't know what they are missing out on! Not only did the carpet get vacuumed but the children were entertained and Mom didn't have to do the work! Hmm… I had a smart Mom!

I have a Dyson DC07 that I've had for about 15 years.
Every 2-3 years I have it serviced by them, included in the cost is new filters, brushes, even the motor and the cyclone, in fact I don't think there's anything from the original machine left.
This year the engineer said they've stopped making parts for this machine so I should get a new one. Nooooo. So he swapped the motor and gave me the old one to keep for when this one breaks.

Dyson cordless is really worth the money if you have stairs to deal with. Light and easy to use
