Our Legislators are trying to decide if they are going to Pass the "Brunch Bill". The hospitality industry wants to be allowed to serve a "spirited" refreshment on Sunday. Currently it is a no-no before 1 PM. The Bill would allow at 10. The wineries are also closed until 1 PM currently.
The Budget is in such straights that they are looking at what else they can tax (the $1 increased tax on a pack of cigarettes failed), but they are hemming and hawing about letting a mimosa or bloody mary be served at 10 instead of 1. Talk about ignoring $$$$$$.
They are holding a Public Hearing on the issue at 8:30 AM Monday. As Legislative Chair of WVBBA, I am going and will most likely speak for the Bill. I will have to leave here by 4 AM to be sure to be at the Capitol by 8 AM to meet with the delegation and get signed up to speak. I expect to be a speaker because I represent "the little guys" as our lobbyist put it and she knows I can speak from our fire code battle. 4 AM!!

"Somebody ought to do something"
And that's how its done. Endless meetings, hearings and letters.
It's the unpaid volunteers like Gillum that go up against the paid lobbyists. the battle just goes on and on.
I wish there were 10 of you in my area.
Admiringly,

Thank you, but it must be done. It is just "my turn" to do it.
If it were not for all those who went before us, many who were beaten and jailed - and I am just speaking of getting women who won the right to own property, have "ownership" of their children, work in respectable professions, and (gasp) vote - we who are married would have nothing. We owe it to the future to "do the right thing".
This Bill is nothing momentous in the scheme of things, but it does do 2 things. It gives business an opportunity to provide what the customer wants as it produces more tax money. The second thing is that in providing tax money with this revenue stream, it will perhaps save another faction of the population (usually those who can least afford it) from being taxed more.
Granted some of it will just transfer from 1 PM to 10 AM, but I believe there will be a large uptick in taxes from the mimosa breakfasts and the stop to buy some wine or "shine" on the way home.

Would your little b&b be able to serve the mimosa or bloody mary if you chose to?

I could get a beer/wine license for $125 or $150 - forget which. I would have to tell them in a diagram how/where I plan to store it etc. It is just not worth it to me. I have never had guests asking for it. I provide wine glasses for those who want it. I like spreading the wealth and letting the wineries sell it.
I just want those who can - and several of our members have restaurants - or want to able to do so. I prefer the cash to stay in my State rather than the over the border 5 States.
