Just had guest call to complain that their room is too hot (first point: it is only 55 degree outside tonight). Anyway, I asked if he had turned on the window air conditioning unit. He said "no because he read in the guest manual that the air conditioning was on a central unit and could only be controlled by the innkeeper". I guess I'll have to change it to read....the majority of our rooms are on a central air conditioning unit. However if you are in rooms 4 or 6, please use the window mounted units. The remote controls are conveniently left on your nightstand.

I was informed recently that something in my room Guest book was out of date - almost 2 years out of date. That goes to tell me they are really not read very often. Sigh!

More likely means most people wont mention things that are out of date. From the general feedback and conversations I have with people most read the in room guest book.

We had a guest ask to borrow a laptop. Something we haven't offered in over 5 years. Sadly out of date. Those pesky books are tough to keep up with!

I would never agree with that. I wouldn't tell anyone something was out of date, I wouldn't even tell a restaurant they misspelled a menu item. I see errors all the time, as I am sure you do.
The most difficult thing is we go to change something in our guest room book/info and realize sheesh that place closed down 6 mo's ago...you can't keep up with it, we do what we can do. There is so much info and the more we provide the more there is to maintain.
I stayed overnight recently and there was NO info in the room, no reminder of check out time (I didn't pay attention or even ask) no breakfast times posted (again I didn't pay attention nor was I actually told in advance) I was on vacation.
AND I stayed at one place, if I stayed at a different B&B back to back for 7 to 10 days I can only imagine. We have to go with the flow - for us it is a big deal, to those on vacation "who cares" we show up we eat we roll.
We need to remember that we are not the only place they stay - mentioning this for the other thread about not reading confirmations. We are traveling, reading all the fine print is tmi. We have pages and pages from every B&B along the trip. Each one with different stuff to digest, we are staying one night, not worth digesting any of it.
Being the devil's advocate on this one.

I added a QR code to the books for lists of things (restaurants, shops) that change frequently. I can keep up with the website much more easily than replacing a page or two in those books. Which, when I tried to do it a few years ago, I found I couldn't find the originals saved anywhere!

I've never had guest books in the room. I have a welcome note that reminds them when breakfast is but that's it. All menus are in the entryway in a binder which is easy for me to just remove one or update as needed. I could never keep up with 9 of them with all the other hats I wear.

Small print? OK! However if you're also going to not bother reading the big, bold, underlined text either don't get a face on or treat the proprietor like it's their fault when you arrive at 1pm and get turned away because the rooms are not ready or there is no-one in, or after a long days driving you find all the local restaurants are fully booked so you have to get back in your car and drive into the city to find something to eat!! Maybe check you've booked the right day too!!

That guest reading the book would be me ... I'd wonder about the remote (if I saw it) I'd be reading the book where it tells me not to touch the controls. A simple sticker over that for rooms 4 and 6 saying use the control would work, right?
I'm the guest who can't figure out the tv controller unless it's really simple ... dog sat for my kids and they have like five remotes for the tv/sound/whatever. I said please just set it so it comes on and show me how to turn it off/on, volume up/down, change channels on ONE controller. No I'm not going to use the bose, the dvd or the blue ray or whatever. Pretty funny to stand in front of the tv and find no controls visible ON it. Remember when we used to get up to change the channel?

We set up simplified instructions for the TV. Still we have people who change it to "TV" and there is NOTHING on "TV". We have to have decoders for cable/satellite here. But they still insist on trying to set it as "TV".
I think the first instruction says "Don't push the TV button". Doesn't work.

Except for us, everyone in my family has at least two remotes for the TV. I was trying to watch a show while my dad slept and I had to keep trying different remotes to get the channel changed. I can almost never turn the TV off at my brother's house so I just stop watching when they go to bed.

Here's my wording. Helps that we only offer Netflix. The remote is placed on top of the instruction note right under the screen.
TV INSTRUCTIONS
We don't receive an off-air television signal nor do we subscribe to cable. Your TV does have a Netflix subscription.
How to 'tune in' Netflix:
Power up the TV using the top right power button on the remote control. (graphic of power button is on actual instructions)
A Vizio logo will appear and disappear. (graphic of logo is on the actual instructions)
Press the lower middle button
(between the 'vol' and 'ch' buttons)
Scroll right or left until 'Netflix' appears (highlighted) in the bottom row of selections.
Press the OK button
Follow Netflix screen prompts to make your program selection.
To preserve the screen, please do not leave a live screen image burning in for an extended period of time. Power off when you are finished.
Thank you!

This is what I currently have...
Simplified guide to Satellite TV
• Push Red TV button to turn TV on. Use Guide button to see channel listings. Use arrows and select channel. If you want to go faster, use page up and down buttons. (Channels over xxxx are high definition. DV channels are for descriptive video.)
Less simplified guide to Satellite TV
• Don’t push the white TV button
• Yes. We said to NOT push the white TV button.
• Don’t change settings to TV using TV/VCR under the TV button.
• Leave set for “Sat” (ie there are no analog channels) or bring it back to “Sat” when you finish playing with the white button and the TV/VCR button that we said not to touch.
• There is a complete Sat manual for how to use the remote hidden under the TV along with an 8 page listing in the smallest writing possible listing all the channels you aren’t going to watch anyway.
• When you do push TV and then TV/VCR and screw it up. Ask US to help you fix it.

I admit it. I do not have guest info books in the rooms. I have (finally) a return address label on the TV figuring they would notice that, with the wifi system name and the password for the wifi. They tell ME what time they want breakfast (please tell me before you turn in for the night). I show where the light switches are. We have cable and the remotes are easily found. They are told whee the fridge is and to help themselves to the books. They get it when I tell them the books are to be "stolen" and the caveat is that they do NOT come back.
Noticed last week the book supply is down. Bought 8 at the Library @ 50 cents each for hardbacks. Could not believe Unbroken was in the for sale rack. Will buy a few each week until both bookcases are full again.

We only have a guest to guest book which can be found somewhere in the front hall unless it has wandered off... The guests write in it about places they like and why, etc. Even an eleven year old wrote in the things to do with kids section for other kids to find. I enjoy reading it myself!
