Any suggestions for a new owner to find new hires?

Hi there! Brand new to this game...I will be taking ownership of my BnB this fall...anyone have any suggestions as to the best place to find reliable, qualified people??

Are you looking for managers to run your B&B for you, or are you talking about housekeepers/cleaners or other staff (part-time or full-time)? How large is your B&B? Will you be offering other services beyond just bed and breakfast?
What can you provide to your employees, beyond a fair wage? Housing? If you are in a seasonal resort area, that can be an issue...
For part-time housekeepers or whatever, you are pretty much limited to people from your local area, especially if you can't provide housing. Indeed, Craigslist, the classified section of your local newspaper -- all will generate candidates, but you will still have to screen and interview.... But really the best is "Word of Mouth:" ask everyone you know in the community -- folks at the local chamber of commerce, shopkeepers, your favorite cashier at the supermarket, etc... -- if they know anyone who would be good. This may generate a smaller but more refined pool of candidates, but you will still have to screen and interview....

We decided to hire an agency and pay them. This way, we get to just expense it all and don't have to worry about all the paperwork. But we have had times where we have to step in and do it ourselves, because no one is available.

Since I do not have enough to actually HIRE someone, every now and then, I hire a high school kid to come do a deep clean. So far, I have gotten good kids.

Looking to hire a fulltime manager, year round, housing provided....It's a 12 bedroom BnB....busy during summer, slower in winter...especially during holidays...other staff I will be hiring locally....
I appreciate any advice...

Depending on where you're located, this can be your biggest challenge. We've gone through phases where we've been blessed with stability and a great team of long-term team members. Then we've had times where we've been unable to find good people, and those we've interviewed or even hired have been unwilling to work, or in a couple of cases, even show up for interviews or their first day of work.
If you get good people, pay them well and treat them well. It's much easier than trying to find new people.

I would suggest putting an ad on The B&B Team website under Need and Want Ads. Best wishes! Also treat them very well with good pay and communication. It will pay you back in loyal service, good reviews, and happy repeat guests.

Ha! That is a GREAT question and I wish there was an absolute answer to. Good people are hard to find.
We are truly blessed to have two sisters that work for us. They are young, but we treat them right and pay them well. If/when you find good people, work hard to keep them. We do here, and it is worth it.

For professional staff, you might consider a job posting on Hcareers, hospitalityonline.com, or LinkedIn. Another great resource is the hotel business in your town - if you know someone, reach out to them and let them know what you're looking for. If you don't know someone, contact HR person and make an introduction. Oftentimes they'll make referrals on your behalf to qualified applicants that haven't been hired at their hotel (yet). Just my two cents.
