Making People Happy - What Life's About!

What a nice gesture; I can't imagine being flooded out and dealing with all of that. It's such a great feeling to give for no reason but to make someone happy.

    Insurance Companies

I'm not sure if they do business in NY but we use Cooperative Insurance Group in VT. Maybe there is a cooperative insurance company in your state … the rates are lower because it's cooperatively owned by the members. Good luck.

Making People Happy - What Life's About!

Thanks. The post wasn't to get kudos though … it got me thinking about how busy we all are and sometimes forget to be concerned about others because we're dealing with all the little stupid stuff of the day. I offered the stay because we genuinely miss seeing them each year. It was after...

Making People Happy - What Life's About!

We had these older guests that came every year for long stays (7-9 nights) one or two times a year. Then all of a sudden they stopped coming. But I'm friends with their son on FB and saw a post by him the other day which got me thinking about them. These are the types of guests that become...

    Left items

Funny, this morning I had a call about a pillow that was left behind LAST YEAR. It was one of those big heavy ones and she asked me to hold it for a couple weeks as they'd come back by and pick it up. They never did but called about 2 months later asking me to mail it. It old them that I...

How do you handle special requests?

Perfect timing as I just opened a reservation and the guest listed the following: No gluten, no garlic, no melons and no egg yolks. I typically make my GF guests an egg soufflé, but this one says no egg yolks. I just emailed back asking what he typically eats for breakfast as I personally...

How do you handle special requests?

When you first open, sometimes you view things differently. After enough early check-ins don't arrive until after regular checkin time, you may find yourself saying that you aren't able to accommodate early check-ins. We've realized that we need sometime to ourselves for lunch, etc.

    How are the reservations going?

Do you get lots of phone bookings or more online? We used to take vacation in June but lost too much money, so we switched it to April when it's quieter. I just put a message on the machine that we are closed and that someone is here taking care of the B&B but to make reservations to secure...

    Feedback Appreciated

Totally agree with Breakfast Diva on this one. If I received this email I'd be deleting it as quickly as it came in. I've dealt with travel writers before and gotten nothing from it - the one from a major newspaper didn't consider a high end log cabin B&B to be her idea of a bed & breakfast so...

    Guests Smoke Weed In Room

I would definitely consider what your other non-pot using guests would think? I'd be upset if a guest was smoking pot on the property and not return to such an establishment again. Many people don't feel it should be legalized (obviously me) so I'd take their feelings into consideration as...

What does 'homemade' mean to you?

I'm not sure I'd really care what someone called it so long as it was good. My scones are sometimes completely from scratch and other times they start with KA cream scone mix. When I make them I add in wonderful dried cherries and almond extract. I certainly know how to make scones from...

    First Guest Gifts

We've given repeat guests little gifts here and there but mostly a free upgrade which they totally appreciate (unless they are attached to a specific room which does happen). I've recently had so many people asking me if I did anything special for guests when they are celebrating during their...

    Inn the Beginning

Enjoy it and try to relax. We can still remember the first guests who stayed with us 10 years ago - a couple from Estes Park, Colorado and they were wonderful.

    Invalid Credit Cards From Booking

Another reason I won't use them anymore. I had signed up trying to fill midweek rooms during the summer with European guests as my competition has everything listed with them. I'm always full weekends and foliage so it was a try for more midweek occupancy. I watched and waited and not only...

    What's this world coming to???

For something special like that, I would have put them in their room and not left it to chance because people are rude. I'm amazed at how many people think EVERYTHING is for them - all the cookies, the best table at the window, the hot tub for a couple hours, shutting off the music and playing...

    2017 - a good year?

We take a deposit for all reservations and have a 14 day cancellation policy with a $25 cancellation fee. If someone books a large reservation over 1500, then they have a $100 cancellation fee. Weddings have an even larger fee. I consider credit card fees as a cost of business (for actual...

    Disappearing reviews

We have never had a review disappear (and we have 510) except for one. The guest was so thrilled 2 days into their stay that they posted here from our wifi. TA doesn't allow that so they removed it - their software apparently scans and finds that stuff. So have any of the reviewers posted...

    Fried potatoes

Try this - take SMALL red potatoes, 2 each person. Microwave for 4-5 minutes (depending on your microwave). Then take them out, squish them down with a heavy wide glass, cover with a pat of butter and sprinkle on some herbs like Herbs de Provence. Pop into your oven or toaster oven to crisp...

    We give away too much

Birnn Chocolates out of Vermont - you have to buy a case which is 4 five-lb boxes but so long as you keep them in a cool dry place they last a couple months. Obviously in the summer I buy them much more often than the winter when we only have weekend business. They are excellent quality and a...

    We give away too much

I put a plate in each guest room the day of arrival with a note from us that welcomes them and it has 8 truffles, 4 different flavors. Guests love them. I also put out plates of cookies in the dining area … cookies and hot cocoa or coffee in the afternoon is a hit with all of my guests.
