How do you respond to hagglers?

Set (price) and forget, may vary with the individual and the method on which the price is based. My goal is a nice place at a reasonable cost. I don’t double the price just because I could get it on certain weekends. Guess I’m also old and tired, if a room isn’t worth the charge then it’s a...

How do you respond to hagglers?

I don't get many that question price and other than physical size/number of beds rooms are pretty much the same outside of color or decorations. I'm more inclined to suggest a "cheap" place to those who want a low price. I feel our price is already reasonable for our area, hopefully below most.

    I would never...

Random comments: Retire/retirement (GoodScount, Biekervi) don't wait for retirement, be happy today. Maybe I'm a dull guy, but can't think of anything I'd rather do than what I do today. Yield Management (Arks, Gillum) I'm not against the idea, maybe I'm just lazy. Perhaps too many years of...

    I would never...

I'm probably opposite on many of GoodScout's suggestions, not knocking them, I suppose not aware of them 30 years ago, maybe too old and tired to worry now. My comments in his bullet list. Figure out what your true cost of the room is. I wasn't that technical, in the beginning figured I need...

    Virtual Assistant

Outsourcing work sounds like a favorable idea, problem is, I can't very well send out a bed to make or a tub to scrub, the everyday physical jobs that become tiresome. Customer relations, that social connection that makes each of us unique, is the fun part of the business. That connection is the...

    I don't allow pets, but...

On this subject as with many others, I feel a business should do what they do well, that which works best for "their" crowd. At one point we accepted pets and smoking was allowed in guest rooms. As mom & pop, with our own age and allergies it seemed efficient to go to a no pet or smoking policy...

Google Analytics - yea or nay?

I have it installed, at some point may update the code, but Christmas holidays don't allow much play time. Like the rest of you, I suppose it is good information, but beyond my understanding for the most part. Once had another little program when hosted with another provider that provided less...

    Merry Christmas!

Grandson has something similar, was a fireplace, that I combined into an entertainment cabinet, generally an electric heater with a very real looking make believe flame. Grandson's could operate as looks only, or an additional switch to add heat (run the heater part).

    Merry Christmas!

And to you and all The year, financially strange, but we survived. Socially, well I'm quiet anyway, guests tend to be a large part of the social life normally and not much of that this year. I appreciate my social interaction with my friends here as I enjoy morning coffee each day. This year...

    If I could start over...

Biekervi, this has been an interesting thread, each post brings up new thoughts. You are welcome to PM me, which I think puts us in contact via email if you desire more detailed answers. At times I fear I write too much. Random additions below. Pricing: my knowledge of this business was limited...

    If I could start over...

To comment on Camge's thoughts. Didn't give much thought to health care as we began in our 40's, today in our 70's it is noticed. Usually fortunate with health care, although a few doctors require a trip to another town. After you have that first health event, how long it takes EMS to arrive...

    If I could start over...

Random Comments: Area, we were warm season visitors for many years, the area felt familiar, winter was different People, college town and tourist town, wide mix of people, but guess I'm on the quiet side myself Enough funds, that may depend on your lifestyle and luck. I always expected to have...

    If I could start over...

Biekervi, I or my answers may not fit the thoughts you desire, but I'll take a shot at an answer. Know that we are an eight room motel, bed without breakfast, working on year thirty at this point. I think we all second guess ourselves at some point in time. I'm in the same building, but change...

    How to - new website

I agree with Arks, I miss Empty Nest, do still see her posts on Facebook occasionally. I don't have that level of skill, but will offer my thoughts as "maybe" good guesses. 1] How to Install WordPress on Windows Using WAMP (Updated) (wpbeginner.com) see if that like works, think that was the...

Likely helpful to anyone using their theme, I often need to be walked through the first time to best understand.

    Website Revamp - Idea Exchange

Arks sums up my thoughts. I like my old toothbrush, change not so much, I'm probably not the one for Generic to check out. Four or five years ago Empty Nest guided me in setting up a new WordPress site, but LOOKS, it still looks pretty much like the first one I did in Frontpage back in the dark...

    Competing With Myself

I take Gillum's view and suggest not using the OTA's. I like the freedom of doing things my way. Yes, it's a quick fix for adding total guests, but all that baggage comes with the plan. Total revenue isn't profit, my view, you are going to pay that commission plus the cleaning or other costs on...

What's Your Forecast for End of Year?

People and pricing is all part of the education process in this business. Early on I felt I needed every dollar, every guest and I hated not to bend and make a deal. It took a while to learn that this was often the person who took the towels to sweeten the deal or otherwise created issues. In...

What's Your Forecast for End of Year?

Strange year for sure, November did quite well, I tend to think folks who would normally stay in a large hotel, chose mom & pop this year where you walk from your vehicle to your room and have limited contact with others. Our December's depend on favorable weather for the ski slopes.

    Construction Discounts

Don't underestimate yourselves or your guests, any hotel can offer a room for the night, but only you can offer YOU, the fact that you care is what sets you apart for the large corporate entity. Promote that 11th room as the "construction room", make your big discount for that room, don't be too...
