It's nice to get tips but I get not tipping the owners.
However, when you let your little ray of sunshine run amok in the room, throwing skittles everywhere and crushing cookies into the carpet and wiping jelly-smeared fingers into the furniture, yeah, you should leave a tip.
Which reminds me, the glass in the front door also needs cleaning. Back in a bit...

Agreed. Of course the problem is they just don't see any of that behavior as unacceptable.

Given the parents, 30 years younger than myself and a lot more flexible, could have picked it all up, yeah, they don't see that behavior as unacceptable.

Wow people do... do the strangest things. What is worse they feel this is ok . It not their problem. Just plain I do what I wish to heck. Those kind of people have no regards for our home. This sounds more like people that use other accommodations.
Sorry Mort you just got a very bad guest. I feel your work load increase.
I am in the process of trying to figure out how to re word our web site to in courage only people in their 40ies and up. I like them the best. We seem to have the most fun/enjoy and they seem to appreciate what we do for them.
This younger crowd is just not my cup of tea.

(GASP!!) Do you mean to tell me he is not the cutest, most adorable little thing in this Galaxy? I cannot understand why anyone would not just get a chuckle out of everything he does.
My Daddy would be making a copy of his strap for them right now as he told them exactly how and where to use it.

Show lots of photos of lace curtains and doilies! Don't mention the hot tub. Or, show photos of the hot tub with geezers in it.

The kid was adorable. Really. I'm just too old to be crawling on the floor after tiny, colorful candy! Not the kid's fault the parents didn't model how to pick up things you've thrown on the floor.

We all know that unfortunately there is an exact opposite correlation between the amount of the messiness in the room and the tip that will be left for the one who has to clean it up. It seems that the ones who are most likely to leave tips are the ones who leave nothing but a couple of tissues in the wastebasket, fold the used towels and stack them neatly in the tub or shower and arrange the recyclables neatly on the dresser. LOVE those people.
Got a $25 tip this morning from 2-nighters who did this very thing. The linen-thieves, of course, left nothing.

Adorable stops when it is the "training ground" for entitled. Touching with messy hands and throwing tiny candies on the floor is the beginning of entitled. I have said to kids here, OK now lets pick up the blocks you have been playing with and we will put them away. So far that has worked that in THIS house we pick things up.

One guy came for two nights. He said he didn't need maid service, brought his own towels, and left a twenty dollar tip behind. Except for the bed covers thrown back the room looked unused. Thank you!

Thursday night my last room was taken by Tourism Division - they asked what the rate would be as they were booking for one of "theirs". Told them I do not charge Tourism Division, who is coming? Turns out it was the lady I have referred to as "my husband's girlfriend" and her husband. He always remarked about what beautiful hair she has (and she is also quite pretty and nice). They were perfect guests - "we have to be there to set up our booth by 8:30 so you sleep in. We do not need breakfast." Before I left for my Special Council meeting at 7 AM, I had made turkey egg cups, English muffin bread, a few muffins, and fruit cups to go. Handed the packed up breakfast to them with a coffee to go for him and a bottle of water for her as they went out the door.
When I went up to flip the room later, I found she had folded the quilt, stripped the bed with all in one of the pillow cases, AND left me $20.

There is no reason to leave a tip for cleaning up, a tip should be for someone who goes above and beyond in their position. Because a person is messy or dirty makes up for those who don't leave a mess, it all comes out in the wash, as they say.

Just for the record - I leave a tip for the maid in a hotel/motel as a matter of course so would also at a B & B. The size of a tip guests leave is determined by THEIR perception of comfort, pleasure, or thanks. And when their kid leaves a horrible mess, a tip IS in order, as an apology. Paying for a bed & a breakfast does not give the guest the right to track mud all over, prr & poop in the bed, hang wet towels or clothes on wood furniture, or do many of the other things that have been done to the rooms of some of these innkeepers - and that includes allowing a child to run around uncontrolled with sticky jelly or candy hands and/or throwing things all over.

Never mind I see you removed your comment to me...so my reply made no sense. okay.I didn't see the poster mention poop and mudd all over, wet towels on the furniture. only skittles, cookies (things that can be vacuumed up) and jam fingerprints. If you allow children then you will find these things ocurr. If you don't want this then don't allow kids. A bed and breakfast is a place to stay the night for most people. Unless it is an exclusive resort or something. I am sharing my pov, and am entitled to it. Thank you.

I removed my comment because I had looked for an intro and did not find one, then after posting did. I did not mean to get snarky. Was just asking.
That particular innkeeper cannot - by law - refuse to take kids. The other things WERE things that have been left to be cleaned up (with no tip either BTW). Just because you can is no excuse for letting a kid run amok. I had 6 of the 2-legged animals and running amok was not on the agenda.
