Ever walked into a guest room, taken a look at the only thing you can think of is... walk out!
Three very lovely ladies staying in a room... total utter disaster. You can't see the bed to make it. Luggage on the floor, dressers covered in stuff. I had to fold clothing so I could get to the sheets and make the bed (and I avoided moving or touching undergarments.) I'm afraid that I might find Jimmy Hoffa in the room, hidden somewhere.

3 girls here for a wedding. Dumped the suitcases on the floor and beds. Walked in, walked out. Did not even attempt to clean. Next day you wouldn't have known they were there except there were some tissues in the trash. They made the beds and hung up the towels.

Yup! Bachelorette Party in our apartment. Glitter, confetti, and balloons all over the floor, dressers, beds, everywhere! Couldn't even wash the sink for it would ruin their decorations instantly. We changed the towels and left.
They were not aware that we offered maid service to the apartment until they saw the new towels. Ever once in awhile a piece of confetti shows up as a reminder. They had a great time and we enjoyed having them!

I would have walked out and not done anything in the room. Fold their clothes? Uhhhh noooo, not me!

Ugh, I am so glad that I do not go into those cottages during their stay.

I got a couple of travelers. One is so clean I would not know they are here. The other down suite well... lets just say OMG!!! double it. Two very very large suite cases three nap sacks , cloths ever where including under ware from him and her. Books out papers ever where. AND they just got here. Me thinks this is going to be a very long few days. The bed has cloths on it. just a mess and they are not in their twenties either. I think more like 50 or so. All this in less then 30 mins of being here. YIKES lordie lordie me thinks I am in for hair raising times.

this is partly why i offer a laundry service don't want people trying to wash stuff in the sink and trying to dry it on the radiators damaging my paintwork.

Unless the clothes are off the bed, I won't make it up. I'll empty trash, replenish bottled water, replace dirty glasses and give them fresh towels. If you've done that, they'll notice and maybe the next morning they'll put their clothes elsewhere. If not, oh well.

I'll do it for a few items on the bed, but I draw the line at underwear (UGH!). If I can make the bed simply by pulling, that's the way to go. But I also know how nice it feels to come back to a nicely made bed.
Of course, tomorrow they are supposed to get a change of sheets. That may just not happen if there is too much on the bed.

The least I would do is leave a pile of clean towels and check the trash. But, yeah, if the bed is covered, I won't make it either.

Our housekeeping staff knows our policy: NEVER touch a personal belonging. If there's personal items, clothes, etc. strewn on the bed, it doesn't get remade.
It's a very simple answer to guests who might ask why we didn't pick up after them: "Our staff NEVER touches your personal belongings. They know I'd fire them if they ever touched your stuff." Kinda hard for them to argue with that.

I am of the mind that you provide a base set of quality services, but try and avoid things you hate or bring risk. I also hate folding laundry; my wife gets into that sort of stuff. I would never allow guests near our machines and I have no plans to launder for free. I even closed the laundry room at my 6-family rental, but that is another story.

I guess that I'm stupid that way. I personally love coming back to a room with the bed made, things in order, etc. So I do what I have to, as best as I can, to get that bed made.
I admit today that I gave up on one of the two beds. But generally I make the bed, even if it means that I have to fold their clothes for them... unless it's undergarmets. At that point... nope.
Maybe it's just my stupidity. Or my trying to please the guest.
Of course today they left after 2PM. Close to my cut off time. Maybe that's something else that I'm stupid about.... maybe an earlier cut-off time?

It is never stupid to give good service.
Never.

My cut off time is 1 PM. IF I'm feeling generous I might go tidy up after that. If it's a late arrival who I haven't met I DEFINITELY go look at the room. Too many disasters when someone thinks no one is going to check the room.

I'm with you, Mort. I fluff the room to protect our investment as much as to please the guest. Wiping down the shower and vacuuming the sand protects the house and means less work when they leave. Getting wet towels off the wood, cleaning up spills right away etc. protects the furniture.
If the guests are regulars, who are neat as a pin, make their bed and dry the shower after using, then I just empty the trash and spend my extra time making them a special treat for the afternoon snack. And they know it!

yes, better to do it right rather than they do it wrong

So I always have the dilemma of when to tidy the room when the guests are hanging around. I don't want to disturb them, nor do I want to be cleaning their rooms at 1 p.m. How do you let your guests know what time you clean the rooms? Do you leave a note on their dresser? If so, does the note state that the rooms will only be cleaned during certain hours, (say 10-12) so if they hang around and don't leave until later their rooms won't be cleaned?

I think everyone is going to have their own answer - what works for them.
But what is definitely important is to make YOUR policy clear, in a couple different ways. Whether in your check in discussion, or clearly posted in the room.
Maybe your "Do Not Disturb" sign they can hang on the door, and it also happens to clearly list your policy (in bold letters). "If this sign is on your door, we will not bother you. Otherwise, we clean rooms from 10-12am. Of course, we always knock first...
I rank this with "when do you intend to check in/out? What time do you plan to take your breakfast?"
