Just got an email from TA stating they are messing about with how they rank properties. (OK, they did not say 'messing about'.) But they did suggest I might 'see some changes in the coming months' and that they had 'already released this new algorithm in other places'.
That could explain what you saw in your town.
As things can't get much worse for us here, unless they mix us in with the hotels and VRBO set, I don't think I'm going to see much difference.
As part of our continued efforts to provide more accurate and helpful recommendations on TripAdvisor, we're updating the TripAdvisor Popularity Index.
We developed this update in response to feedback from travelers and owners to create more consistency in rankings between properties with an established review history and newer properties that are accumulating reviews and building their reputation on TripAdvisor.
We're notifying you because you may see changes in the Popularity Index over the next several months as a result. We've already introduced this update for accommodations in other areas, and are happy to report measurably positive results.
I take this to mean that B&B's (the email did specify B&B's) that have been around for yonks, with good reviews and lots of history, are tired of being knocked into 15th place because some new places got tons of reviews in the first month.

Yes, my best friend just sent me the email. Not much you can do. I do suspect that those who pay them the $$$ will find themselves at the top. One inn seems to be giving a bottle of wine to all their guests..can't prove it is a bribe...but sure sounds that way :-(

Nothing much has changed on our local TA page. There are only 19 B&B's on it and 7 have closed down and another one is in the wrong category. If those accommodations start to move up in their ratings it will be very strange.

I personally wish they would get their act together about removing closed properties - if its reported they should investigate - does them no favours to have inaccurate info on their site.
