An Oregon hotel drops lawsuit after a court rules that TA doesn't have to reveal anonymous reviewer's information.
Legal observers say Marshall’s ruling is significant and precedent-setting because it is among the first in Oregon and the nation to use media shield laws to protect the identities of anonymous Internet reviewers on such websites as TripAdvisor, Yelp, Google Reviews or Amazon.com.

Only the beginning. Let them just PO someone with deep enough pockets to take the matter to higher courts. TA must have felt something was off with the review as they did take it down. (at some point)
"The April 23, 2014, review about the inn stated that “laundry and housekeeping are either high or drunk” and “breakfast is nasty, the rooms are nasty.” The review also claimed that “the owner smokes weed” and “Jen front desk had phone sex with someone.”
The review has since been taken down."
Making claims of unlawful acts should have been flagged by TA in the first place.

Unless the reviewer was following everyone around, how the heck could they have seen everything they claim happened? And using the word 'nasty' multiple times ought to be a giveaway.
BTW, I couldn't get 'nasty' to show up as a valid word on Android. Had to spell it out and it wanted to correct it to hasty.

What can you expect from an android? You need a real person, like Siri.

And TA probably sends regular e-mails to that reviewer asking if they would like to review another hotel/restaurant or whatever.

Although proving a negative is dang near impossible, it was humorous to note it stated in the article that they couldn't disprove what the writer complained about. Probably just the way it was stated.
I'm not sure this ruling can be extrapolated out, but if it can, then you can pretty much say anything you want about anything you want, anytime you want. Of course I mean that in the worst possible way. The internet is an ugly, hateful place for most people.

This just seems a ridiculous state of affairs to me. Basically this means that anyone can write any dam lies they like about any business and TA can publish those lies but neither ta nor the author can be made to take responsibility for any damage caused by those lies.

It has been several years and I don't remember the exact process, but TA did remove an incorrect review for me, took several days, but it was removed.
Guest was upset ranting about his stay, problem was he didn't stay at our property, I'd just be guessing that it was a nearby property with a similar name and in his rage he picked us. His complaint, front desk staff, cabin he occupied, fold out couch, nothing applied to our property so maybe that helped my getting it removed if anyone took the time to check.

And we've had reviews disappear for no reason. I know which bad ones are gone. The good ones not so much.

And those who have an ax to grind can use innuendo to cause as much or more damage than an outright statement. Many use FB for that.

A recent guest told me at check-out that they just did a 5* review for us on TA. Now it's 2 weeks later and it's still not posted, so I'm sure they think we're trying pull a fast one on them and we did the review ourselves because it's from our IP address.
Oh joy.
Oh, and if you're wondering, I did send the guest an e-mail telling them about the situation and asked to repost from a different address. Nothing...

That's happened here, too. I've seen the guests writing the review on the guest computer. They've pointed it out. Never showed up.
Can't prove that bad reviews written here have never shown up but I hope that happens, too.
