Let's clarify this, I grew up and spent 28 years of my life in S Africa, its a wonderful country to visit but it also is the most violent IN THE WORLD viz: One carjacking every 3 mins, one HIV postive rape every 4. Police do not do anything
Every S African knows someone that is a victim of VIOLENT crime. My 1st cousin was yanked out her car while waiting outside her kids school, and shot through the throat. Her sister was held at gunpoint for several hours.
It's a sad society but don't let this article make you start putting bars on your windows. For us, that news article - despite sad - is, oh well, another day in the life of .................

She was just posting the information. It is a sad state of affairs for sure. But it wasn't intended to make us put bars on our windows. I won't be going to South Africa ever in my lifetime not because of this..but because I have absolutely no desire to do so.

It is a wonderful destination and something that anyone who does not visit sometime in their lifetime is missing out on, however the violence will keep people away. Then again I would not wonder the back streets of London, New York or Chicago at night

but that does not stop me visiting them and broadening my horizons every chance I have.

Sorry it just has no appeal to me whatsoever and you could never get me to stay on a plane that long:-(

Some of us are forced to be on planes for a long time due to relatives in other far away lands. There is nothing worse - it is torture for me to travel that long.

I love to travel and I don't mind long flights. When I flew to Germany with my mom I was 6 mos pregnant... not torture for me so much as for the flight attendants who got sick of me making laps. If I could afford it I'd travel all over the world.

It is not the PLANE time in total, it is the whole trip time - but the plane time is not fun either - I am tall and my knees can go through the seat in front of me. From Seattle to Brisbane Australia is 24 hours travel time. NOT FUN. That is from airport to landing final destination.

ah yes, I hate dealing with the airports, my travel days are over which kinda limits me when I want to go diving!

Cruises can take you to great dive spots as well as over near Grey Swan Inn Blackstone VA (This is pretty cool we plan on heading over there!) Lake Rawlings Christine can tell you more about it, I think she has a blog article on it as well.

What is interesting is my newspaper just ran a full page spread on Cape Town saying it is a tourist mecca, beautiful city, has to be on your 'must see' list, etc. But don't go out after dark, keep in a crowd wherever you go, etc. You could say that about a lot of cities here as well. I just don't want to go all that way to be fearful. But it sounded beautiful.

There are plenty of cities like that. I mean, ANY LARGE CITY. Sheesh look at the one right near here - goes back and forth as murder capitol of the USA.

Yeah, I wouldn't go out at night there, either. Heck, during the day was bad enough, but then there are tons of other people around, if that would do any good in this day and age.

Chicago is a great place to visit - by day. You do not have to be on the back streets to be stupid to wander at night. Do not venture out of the Loop at night. Chinatown is a really neat place during the day. At night you are ripe plums for picking, and fortunate if you do not wind up dead.
In most cities you can go from skag to swag in the space of 2 blocks.
