Well, we decided to go the agency route and hired someone to help out for 3 hours a day. REALLY not sure how long it will last, I have a low tolerance for doing stupid work repeatedly (today it was the top sheet upside down, but she's new, so I'm smiling and just telling her to fix it.). Doesn't appear to be much of a self starter, she's okay to do the same thing daily, so I'll leave her the grunt work I don't want to do. But at least I have time to rest and get healthier. But I'm managing to get more done and some of the extra too.

Well, since these were embroidered, it should have been easily. Embroidery down and shows perfectly when reversed. But when you lay top sheets, where the material is imperfect is always laid up, so that the perfect side is to the sleeper and shows at the top.
Also, she doesn't seem to understand that you need to fold over part of the covers with the top sheet.

gotcha. embroidery needs to show when folded. Yes, I do know that.
Not everyone knows how to make a bed. Our first housekeeper didn't know much, but has since gone on to bigger hotels and comments to us that they do certain things 'wrong.' LOL

it is the responsibility of the business owner to train the person how it should be done. If they don't know, we need to train them. If they refuse or still don't get it, it is time to consider replacing them.

I am totally serious about this suggestion .... take pictures to show. viewable on smart phone or in work binder or whatever. I had a lovely couple work for me and there was a bit of trouble with fine points like that because starting out it seems like the sheet is the correct way and then they discover that the foldover is baffling. I liked the towels a certain way, the robes a certain way. End of the bed a little tray with chocolate kisses. Nothing EARTH SHATTERING and I did not want to lose these workers nor did I want to give up on my plan for the room ... I wanted things as I wanted them - special touches that made the room look special to my eye. So I took pictures. Tissue box here, small trash bin there. They would clean like mad and then one of them would go in and check on those things. Worth a try.
I do this for myself when I have to untangle computer cords and things. I snap a picture of where and how things are connected so I put it back together the right way.

Our last innsit had some photos of the breakfast setup in the innkeeper's instructions binder. Very helpful. A picture is worth 1000 words, or 1/2 hour of me trying to figure out how you want things to look. Also, another innkeeper wasn't going to be able to spend time showing me around the kitchen much, so she put Post-it notes on the outside of the cabinets with the contents. It's a given that when I'm in a kitchen not my own, I open every drawer and every cupboard looking for 1 item.

I found one thing to praise on and waited until all the help was together. It changed the whole situation. It was a person who works for compliments and make them feel good about the work. The same person worked for someone else earlier and they have nothing but complaints for the worker.

That's great! We have had the most wonderful room manager for the last year. As our long season nears that fabulous moment when we take a break in the action, we can't thank her enough. Crossing our fingers she will join us again when we fire things up again in December.
regarding getting them to stick around....
There was a 17% raise, a vacation bonus, and hiring a fill-in so travel could happen. Totally worth it considering how little we have to focus on the rooms while getting great compliments about them from guests.

Yesterday I forced her to sit down and fed her some leftover wedding cake and a soda. Hey, better her than me!
