Batting .000 with walk-ins

In the past 2 weeks we've had about 10 walk-ins. All from Europe. Some with kids. Mostly couples. We're quoting them our OFF season rates, no extra person fees and they are walking right back out the door.
Not sure what they thought the rates were going to be, but they all seem happy when I tell them about the place that charges $85. I'd rather sleep in.

In Europe, b&bs are typically less expensive than hotels. You're getting the bargain hunters.

we just got marked down for value by a Spanish couple - they thought $126 was expensive! this is dead cheap where I am!

It's one of these weird rules... it's not about you at all, it's about them. Point them at the hotel that's cheapest and just let them go. We do it a lot with people in email and on the phone. We are too expensive for them, because their "value" is cockeyed, we send them down the line to learn what you get for cheap in the city. (It ain't pretty.)

You are going to the wrong places... or staying in the big cities
But you get what you pay for... the worst is like a Formule1 or etap. The hard Ikea like bed isn't us.

Just checked. The place I've been sending them is full tonight. Highest priced room is $76.

If I can't send them to a B&B, I send them to places that are cheaper... but always cheaper with a reason. Like the place up the street with the decor that I can only call early prison cell meets grandma.

We send them to the cheap place up the road that we think does a decent job. We don't recommend the cheap place nearer to us because, unfortunately, they get very mixed reviews. If we aren't for them, our goal is to point them towards what might work better.

One of these times, I'm going to just ask them how much they wanted to spend, if they wanted free parking, breakfast, etc. And when they tell me, just tell them honestly how far out of town they will need to stay to get it for that budget. I might be as much as an hour out of town...

Or she really did not want to leave home and only called around to satisfy Hubby. She probably said "See I told you everything would be full!". Heaven only knows how many other places she called and pulled the same routine. LOL!
