    What would you have done?

We had a mother who tried ordering for her kid because the kid wouldn’t eat whatever it was we were serving. ‘Oh, just make waffles for her.’ No waffle maker. ‘Then just a donut.’ No donuts. ‘How about a bagel? You must have a bagel! English muffin? What is this place?’ My home, not a...

    What would you have done?

Our alternate to someone not wanting the ‘bread option’ was scrambled eggs. If we heard, ‘I don’t like scrambled eggs,’ it was always an apology, ‘sorry, that’s all Gomez knows how to make.’ It’s not a diner, people.

    Message from Copperhead

We had a gas line installed about 7 years ago. It took the drill about an hour to go one foot—solid granite. Definitely would not be getting underground electric lines! Even tho everything else is underground the electric utility won’t pay for that drill.

    What would you have done?

I’ve actually had to tell guests we were not planning on making individual servings of eggs so we used them all in the French toast batter. The biggest problem with doing this is suddenly no one wants what you’ve prepared, they all want what they want.

    Pet Policy

Sorry, we are unable to accommodate pets of any kind. No reason why, just you can’t. As soon as you start explaining why not, you get a million reasons why your policy is wrong. You don’t have to mention service animals, their people know they are not pets.

    There’s nothing to eat!

We always found that to be the case with a group. They would spread their snacks and drinks all over the breakfast counter and leave the glasses and plates in the living room. We’d clean before going to bed and again before breakfast.

    There’s nothing to eat!

Are they the only guests? If yes, let them sulk.

What are your marketing efforts worth?

If someone shows up with a broker in tow, they will want the sale broken out by business and real estate. There are tax implications.

What are your marketing efforts worth?

I think your marketing efforts show up in revenue. If your marketing is good, your can command a higher price because your revenue will be better.

    There’s nothing to eat!

I have sympathy for the teen. It always happened when I went grocery shopping. The fridge would be full, the cupboards restocked, and it took two days before the kids could ‘see’ the food. ‘There’s nothing to eat,’ was a common refrain until the little light went on in their teen brains. (That...

    Anti-Vax Guests

I’m vaccinated. I’m still not going to travel to places where the vaccination rate is abysmal and people don’t take it seriously until they’re on a ventilator. It’s not stupid to be cautious when the virus continues to present new versions of itself. Vaccinated people are still getting sick...

    Sold EZPZ

Best wishes! We’ve been retired for two months. Haven’t had a chance to enjoy it because we have been trying to find a place to live, but we’re closing on a house this week. Looking forward to just living for awhile.

    We’re ‘those people’

I did that. Opened the doors. Now I’m being buzzed. Ugh.

    We’re ‘those people’

We’ve been enjoying the cooler weather here up until last night. We’ve had the windows open and, during the day when no one else is here, we’ve left the door to our room open, too. Last night it got humid and stifling so Gomez turned on the A/C. When I went to bed, I first checked the door was...

    interview Questions

How much control over daily operations does this position have? What do you expect this person to do? How invested will they need to be to be successful in the role? Then I can think of questions to ask.

@Tom One of our favorite seasonal restaurant lasted about three months out of the six they are usually open. The reasons they gave for early closing were everyone is exhausted, they can’t get supplies, their summer staff is going back to school. The place across the bay from them took three...

A lot of people retired last year. A lot of people were laid off with no hope their jobs were coming back. A lot of people gave a lot of thought to the rat race and decided to opt out. Given that probably 80% of the people who show up for hospitality jobs are women, who were very hard hit last...

    Cracking eggs one-handed

Egads! We had to deal with multiple surgeries and a motorcycle accident, but there were two of us, so it mostly worked out. Congrats on your new skill! You showoff!

This has been the scenario for years. The last time we hired someone one person applied. (5 years ago) When we closed he went to another inn. However, I will say most of the b&b’s in my old cohort have easily found 2-3 housekeepers this season. The visa program didn’t bring in enough workers to...

    Best of times/worst of times?

We’re having to live in a hotel right now. Tell me about prices! And no long term stay discount, either! There’s construction going on immediately behind the building and a 4-lane roadway in front. It’s not like we’re enjoying our stay.
