    Saying goodbye

Mort, we will miss you, thanks for the help over the years. Like Gillum if you find yourself down this way yell and stop and see us, always nice to meet online friends in person.

Annoying or flattering? It’s all in the attitude I guess.

Guess everywhere is different, but to me, people seem the reason for choosing a B & B over a hotel, my personal experience is limited to a breakfast where 29 of us shared one table, little kids, teenagers, up to us old folks.

    It's the little things...

I may be too easy, as long as their room is ready for them, I don't really care if they come early, gets that job of checking in out of the way. Mostly I ask for an estimated arrival time (range), outside of that time range they may be waiting on me if I have errands to run.

    Request of the day.

I suppose we are seen as mom, family member, friend or servant, too often the latter, but at least they did choose to stay at our little place. My favorite is the non-guest that rings the doorbell at 3AM needing directions to Roan Mountain, sometimes difficult to keep a smile on your face.

    Only Scammers Use Telemarketing...

Agree we don't like telemarketers; most I receive are RoBo calls, soon as the recording starts, I'm gone. I favor email, keep a record and it helps with a short memory. Different areas may be different, many more seem to use TA reviews in our area than Google, I don't use X and BK.

    Goodbye, Non-Refundable Rates

A hundred room hotel can absorb a few that cancel, for mom and pop it more like canceling a block of 20 or 30 room at the large hotel and I tend to bet that they have a stronger policy for large groups. For me I have a shorter cancelation period, work okay most times, but I often wonder how...

What would you do? Who right?

For a different view. I follow some photographers on Facebook that do beautiful work, no doubt that they could improve on my iPhone photos, on the other hand, I painted the walls, I build the furniture on site, the wife made the curtains, everything here is DIY. I tend to wonder if I would be...

Duvet vs blanket and other stuff from vacation

Easy answer, you wouldn't want "me" to make your bed and the wife wanted to use flat sheets. Happy wife, happy life. We use oversize sheets, so they do seem to stay in place pretty well. No more recently, daughter does most of the room servicing, can't say that the sheets won't change in the future.

Duvet vs blanket and other stuff from vacation

Odd guy with the motel. We follow the hotel style of triple sheets (all flat sheets) bottom sheet, next sheet, blanket, top sheet. Looks clean, seems to appeal to most guests.

What would you do? Who right?

I may not be understanding correctly. For me: 1] I don't list a static price or price range on the website, in the past when I did, there were always those guests who expected the cheaper price to be available every day, they didn't follow the difference between the tiny room on Tuesday and...

    Guests Are Changing...

" Maybe attaching a cost to their rudeness will help? " Money seems to have a way of catching the attention of folks or at least ease the pain for the extra work. I agree, I think prices help create the feeling of being entitled. Our small town is about half students, used to see many...

    Keypads and Keys

I agree, I do care about our guests, but I have a life and I can't be available 24/7. Either you stay at a large place with a fulltime staff that doesn't care about your needs, or you understand that I care and will try to meet your needs, but I do eat, sleep, go to doctors. A guest has to...

    Should I Sell A Service?

We have a recycle can in every guest room with a sign as to what can or can't be recycled. For safety I'm not going to sort through their trash, but I swear at times I'm tempted to send it all to them COD and let them sort it out at home.

    Should I Sell A Service?

Odd thought would there be any benefit to you to offer "patio" service at a specific time (or perhaps at an inconvenient time for the guest to discourage the practice) beginning or ending of your serving times so that your efforts are not split between areas.

Fail to Plan... Plan to Fail

Isn't that the truth, those folks tickle me, at least good for a laugh. They call, seem impressed, "you have the cheapest rates in town", and then start asking for DISCOUNTS. Nope, I don't play the game, I quote the discount price to everyone up front. I have said, well I could add $100 and give...

Are you picking on me :)

Fail to Plan... Plan to Fail

We go up a small amount, I'm usually behind in my level of pricing, the tradeoff is nice, easy-going guests who leave good reviews since they got more than expected and many become regulars, makes for a good life.

    Unhappy Guests Want Discount

I don't use the services of OTA's but was under the impression that their reviews "may" be more limited to an actual guest experience. TA doesn't have any restriction. Potential guest called when wife was cooking supper, told him what the rate would be and went to the office only to find a room...

    Stairs and Private Bathroom

GoodScout, as one of those old people, it does seem that when/if we get travel it requires taking everything but the kitchen sink with you on a trip. Fortunately, as the one toting the junk, ours didn't go to the 3rd floor, but included my suitcase, her suitcase, "Big Bertha" the oxygen machine...

    Inflation!

Have raised slightly for summer, maybe $5, likely could raise more to avoid being too cheap, I'd have to take out a mortgage to pay the rates I see some around here asking. Of course, I remember when my favorite place in our area went from $10 to $13 and I thought it was awful.
